Review:

A charming perusal of the song literature of husband and wife during their early years that contains as its principal piece the twelve melancholy 'Kerner Lieder'.

After that there is a crisscross from Clara and Robert - some happy, some depressed but all wonders from both composers.

Holzmair - as I have remarked before - may not have the most sensuous of voices but what he dos have is a profound understanding of the poet's art. When he sings in the
Kerner lieder,
Gesang erschallt,
Zum Dome wallt
Die liebe Gestalt

it is sung with an almost ephemeral feeling for music: yes but poetry first.

And so it is in all twenty-nine of the songs.

It is often written that while Clara was knowledgeable with melody line it was Robert who treated the poet as an equal. Be that as it may be Clara's Geheimes Flüstern hier und dort is a touching piece and the same can be said of much of her other lieder.

Holzmair has had the common sense to construct almost a song cycle of all the songs. Sung as a unit, husband is speaking to wife who responds in kind - often giving as much as getting.

Recently I had the opportunity to hear Imogene Cooper in a Mozart Concerto. I was impressed but not a bit surprised. Anyone who can play Schubert and now Schumann to Holzmair' baritone can respond in kind with Mozart.

A more fascinating way to spend well over an hour I do not know.

My only criticism of this set is the program notes, which are short and snappy. Nothing like the masterpieces that Graham Johnson supplies for Hyperion. Texts are all there and the sound is fine.
