Mozart--Quintet for Piano and Winds, K452; Brendel, Hungarian Wind Qt. In 1794 Mozart described this as "the best work I ever composed." My Casals/Horszowski* Beethoven Cello Sonatas on Pearl (1930's) are absolutely superb Harry. His playing is wonderful.....in fact, I believe it is a good time to spin these. Plus, I have to admit, the hisses and pops just give it a different listening experience that I enjoy from time to time. Actua...

Absolutely love this recording. This is one of the first cds that got me hooked on classical music. I thought it to be out of print however. Where did you "land" this one...so to speak.

And I cannot disagree with Georges take on the MONO set....if I would have started with these, I would have been VERY happy with them as well and then be looking to get the stereo cycle down the road. One thing that may also persuade you to get the MONO cycle is that it is probably more likely to go...

I am VERY happy with the Kempff stereo cycle of the piano sonatas....having said this, I have heard nothing but good things about the mono set which may be worth putting on the shelf beside my stereo set down the road. One thing to remember is there are two stereo editions....well, sort of: http://e...

As the beginner of this thread, I feel constrained to note that I have changed my recommendation for Mahler symphony cycles from the Bernstein Sony to the Segerstam/Chandos, and that his Mahler 2 in particular is one of the 8 CD issues I listed as the best I first encountered in 2006. How disrespecting....doesn't anyone want to mention his Mahler cycle....
