Mahler 6 Kansas City Symphony

“My Sixth seems to be yet another hard nut, one that our critics' feeble little teeth cannot crack.” So wrote Gustav Mahler to conductor Wilhelm Mengelberg. Mahler's Symphony # 6 in A minor was composed during a more contented period in the composer's life, 1902-1903 but not premiered until 1906. Ye...

There is no doubt that Joyce DiDonato is THE voice of our time, a consummate artist (and yes even an entertainer in the best sense of the word) at the very peak of her powers, enjoying every moment and note she sings. Not quite that good, but when the Bernstein 60 CD Symphony edition first came out, CD Universe offered it for $59.95 pre-order and so I ordered a copy. Sony delayed the release it seems and then finally released it at around $75. They honored the original price and shipping was reasonable. It was go...

Mike, as usual you are correct. The Universe sounds more 4th movement of the Symphony # 4 than the 2nd. I was alluding to the more advanced sound world of the movements as opposed to the 1st and 3rd movements of the 4th.

I am not sure the Stern recording is still available.

Presumably, when a concert featured a piano or violin concerto in, let's say, 1760, the soloist was the composer and had written the piece for himself. Very likely, the composer/soloist would also conduct the orchestra. Such was the case of Mozart who wrote most of his early concerti (1-13) for hims...
