Got out the Sony Stravinsky box and listened to some late music, Threni, Canticum even the never heard Sermon, Narrative and a Prayer.

Sometimes, the best laid plans... I looked forward to seeing my conducting hero Stanislaw Skrowaczewski perform the Schubert 9th in St Louis with the St Louis SO. Mike, as usual you are correct. The Universe sounds more 4th movement of the Symphony # 4 than the 2nd. I was alluding to the more advanced sound world of the movements as opposed to the 1st and 3rd movements of the 4th.

I am not sure the Stern recording is still available.

From what I understand there are a couple arrangements of what Ives left. I know only the OOP recording by Michael Stern and the Saarbrucken Radio SO on Col Legno. If you know the 4th Symphony especially the 2nd and 4th movements, you will have an idea of the Universe Symphony.
