Re: Tonight's Task: Kondrashin's Shostakovich
finished 10, 11, 12, 13... No. 10: Not near the top of my list of Shostakovich symphonies, and Kondrashin seems to mail in this performance... the performance is slightly rounded and not as sharp as it could be No. 11: A good, but not stellar performance... I am partial to the Rostropovich's live wi...

Re: Tonight's Task: Kondrashin's Shostakovitch
After a few hours rest I resumed this morning... the paper is coming along and so is the cycle... No. 8: Kondrashin seems to have a way with the brooding, tragic symphonies... written in 1943, its seems clear why the symphony takes this tone... a rather solid performance No. 9: Shostakovich's celebr...

Re: Tonight's Task: Kondrashin's Shostakovitch
Just finished the tremendously lengthy 7th... No.6: One of my favorite movements of all of Shosty's symphonies is the third movement here... its a raucous gallop and Kondrashin's tempo and temperament suits it well No.7: Kondrashin's take is insightful, serious, and respectful... its not the best ou...

Good for you for following through with the entire cycle. Please continue to keep us posted. I hope listening to these symphonies in no way hampers your train of thought! Halfway through Symphony No.6 at the moment... some observations... No.1: A wonderful recording of young Shostakovich's first symphony... the symphony is full of wit, humor, emotion, and darkness... Kondrashin and the Moscow Philharmonic capture the Russian sound here nicely No.2: Kondrashin leads t...

It's clear from his music that John Adams is quite a "character", having heard Mr. Adams speak from the stage while conducting his own works ( My Father Knew Charles Ives , and The Wound Dresse r) and Beethoven's 7th with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra last year... i'll agree he is a character, b...
