As for "Jack the B," come on, Dulcinea, you can do better than that. No one would have called Bach "Johann" or any nickname derived therefrom, any more than anyone ever called Mozart "Johannes" though in fact that was his given first name. He was Sebastian Bach . I think the wenn is probably correct, see here: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV8.htm. Quite a few German spellings have changed in the last few hundred years...

Since Uchida was mentioned: I once borrowed the complete set and found that in some concertos her playing really put me off! It's as if she doesn't dare to fully press the keys because it's Mozart's music... On the other hand, in some of the later concertos her playing sounds natural and I liked it....

Agnes, is there a hope that one day the complete Nissen book can be digitized for use by scholars such as yourself and John, and any other interested parties, for that matter? It will only decay beyond any salvation eventually and one can hope that digitizing can be done without further damaging it...

However, I do fear that this is going to cost me quite a bit of money due to me now wanting to get more Horowitz. Apparently DG are (or just have done so) reissuing the Complete DG Recordings boxset now with an extra disc making it a 7 disc set. Good place to start? I'm not really the right person ...
