Sir John was a delightful man. I saw him conduct on a few occasions and he always was excellent. I even got the chance to interview him for my college paper. The reharmonization is one reason why I like the Rimsky-Korsakov version. One need not think Musorgsky's original "ungrammatical" or incompetent to feel somehow unsatisfied when listening to it. Bolet was one of my favorite pianists of the past century. I saw him on many occasions and he was always a titan of the keyboard. His Liszt was sensational and he cut a huge figure on stage. Unforgettable and brilliant. Every good CD collection deserves some Bolet.

When George Szell was ill in 1969, I saw Louis Lane replace him as maestro for the Cleveland Orchestra concert in NYC. I do not remember the program, but, I must say Szell was sorely missed that evening.

The Messiaen was one of the projects that sadly never came to fruition. Peter Grimes was another casualty, of Lenny's passing on. Remember, Bernstein's death happened in 1990 and what I read was probably in a publication long since gone with the wind.
