Re: Composing? Not anymore. Throwing in the towel.

Once again Garrett has caused me to come out of my CMG exile. Your comment on not wanting to "work" after coming home from "work" is perfectly natural. I composed quite frequently up to and including the first few years of marriage. I found it no problem to teach college by day and then compose at n...

Yet another post that pulls me out of self-exile.

I knew Paul while we both were at Eastman. He was a kind person and at the time very much into music for the theater. I never kept track of him once I left there.

I recently acquired my first Gouvy (the cpo recording of his 6th symphony & a Sinfonietta) and came away truly impressed by its quality. I plan to get more of his music.

Now back to my exile

I've come out of my self imposed exile to say congrats to Garrett and the fact that the "Song of the Night" Symphony is one of my all-time favorites makes it all the more sweeter.

Somewhat Cagean with some rhythmic grooviness starting in the late 3 minute area. I found nothing funny nor original about it, but I still liked it. Thanks for sharing.

My collection is probably bigger than your collection. LOL

Quite frankly with the quirks that life throws at us composers, I tend to keep mum about any performance, publication, commission, recording, etc. until they've materialized.

Interesting sub-topic of "critic" vs" theorist". My take is that a critic without clear theoretical points to back them up is not worth my consideration which is why I enjoy such a one as Rosen.

As to the main topic, I'm a sucker for viol consorts like the ones Lawes and Jenkins explored.

No, not a lot of "Roumanian" flavor in his music but it is really tasty stuff. I have enjoyed his larger chamber music pieces. Tonal but with lots of chromaticism that sometimes moves in surprising ways. He really should be better known.

From all that I do know, all Mahler symphonies except the 1st & 4th (certain movements excepted) are quite hard. I once heard the Eastman Philharmonia play Mahler's 5th and while it was a good performance there were places that were strained.
