I heard Schoenberg on a late night college radio program and had to find out more. The unearthly music drew me into classical music in general.

I myself don't like burned CDs. Not even the legal ones. I like liner notes, artwork, etc. But I will say that the record companies, the big ones, deserve being punished. For years they left the music fans and put their energies into the music for the lowest common denominator-to sell as much as pos...

When I read about this one I thought the quotes would be really annoying, especially since I read about how "william tell" is repeated. But I really ended up falling in love with this symp. It is absolute genius and I can't hear it enough.

Or Haitink or even that Celibidache...despite the intentions. Again, however they came to their resulting sound, as long as they play the score correctly I am somewhat satisfied. I have to say that examples like this really amaze me in how people can all play the same score and sound quite different.

What???

My god I think of Shosty's Quartets to be some of the MOST emotional engaging out there. I can't even understand why anyone would think differently. I say that with respect.

Hi Darryl. I can't speak for the Boulez recording. I do however own the HvK/Vienna Philharmonic recording and that's considered by some as one of the finest performances of that work. Worth considering... HvK almost turned me off from Bruckner totally as I mentioned in another thread. I know it is ...

The Bartok six string quartets (1908-1939) are considered by many to be the greatest works in that medium since Beethoven. The Juilliard Quartet's pioneering Columbia recordings of the cycle recorded circa 1950, the first on records, have been rare collector's items for many years. The original per...

Even sadder than Chopin dying as young as he did is the way he changed from this playing, dancing kid to a suspicious, wary and anxious man. This sounds like all to familiar of a story. I have this book on my to read list so I will have to get back on it. I love solo piano music so of course I love...

Whatever faults Bernstein may have had his more lasting effects are certainly positive. Not just in classical music, but in jazz too as he was first to champion many jazz musicians who pushed the boundaries of jazz. His opinion was very respected by the jazz world and rightly so.

I look forward to hearing more. Wait, there is a Lenny Bruckner 4th? Sorry I mean Bruckner in general...

Not that I am the maestro, but...There are a lot of relationships in those pairs. One of the most obvious to me regard chord progression rules (the triads with those roots). Also they are similar in distance to tonic. The 2nd and 7th are closest to the tonic. The 3rd and 6th are next closest and the...

Bush's reign is a disaster. His mideast policy destructive. His domestic policy repulsive. But a broken clock is right twice a day, so occasionally he says something that I don't necessarily disagree with. But the man hasn't an original thought in his head. You can hear that when he "reads" his spee...

Supposedly, if memory serves me right, the sharp 4th comes up more often and sooner in the overtone series. If I am wrong someone please correct me. As I posted before, the first seven unique (ignoring octaves) notes of the overtone series spell the Lydian Dominant scale - 024679A if we use the bas...

What do you all think of George Russell's Lydian Chromatic concept (in general that the fourth note of the scale, sharpened, is more "natural" than the natural fourth.

So for C Major:

C D E F# G A B

Instead of:

C D E F G A B
