Re: New York Philharmonic 2013-4
Am I correct in assuming that you are the Kwoon that had that huge CD collection? If so, it's nice to see you back after so many years of absence. :) Yep, I am that notorious former CD collector, and I remember you too! It's good to see quite a few familiar names here, and to learn that Hamelin has...

Re: New York Philharmonic 2013-4
Like I said several posts above, Alan Gilbert was "technically very good". But technique doesn't impress me as much as musicality. The ultimate test of musicianship is to see if the conductor/performer can make a hackneyed piece sound interesting, e.g. the "Pathetique" Symphony. You haven't seen him...

Re: New York Philharmonic 2013-4
Perhaps Gilbert is a decent musician, but after seeing some fantastic recent performances by Tilson Thomas, Barenboim, Gergiev and Levine, the contrast between these and Gilbert made him look like an amateur. I understand that Gilbert is still young and he is probably very good among his cohort (i.e...

Re: New York Philharmonic 2013-4
I wonder what you guys think of Alan Gilbert. The NY Phil came to Ann Arbor last week and I saw them perform the "Pathetique" Symphony. Technically very good, but musically plain. Gilbert showed a serious lack of creativity.

Re: Van Cliburn has passed
His recordings of the Rach 2 and 3, the Brahms concertos, Liszt's 12th Hungarian Rhapsody and Chopin's solo pieces are some of the greatest piano recordings in history. I saw him live once, on May 24th 1997, in Austin TX when he performed the "Emperor" Concerto and MacDowell's 2nd Concerto with the ...

Re: I'm not buying any more CDs ...
I visited for the first time in years and this thread caught my eye right away! Some of you may remember me as the crazy guy who used to buy hundreds of CDs every week. Guess what, after buying DG's 38-CD "Karajan Symphony Edition" on June 24th 2009, I stopped buying for good. Not just CDs, but musi...

My collection of Rach 3 recordings has gotten so big that I have been bragging about it whenever and wherever I can. I received my 162nd version yesterday:
Rachmaninoff: piano concertos #1 & #3 (Barry Douglas/Russian State Sym Orch/Svetlanov, RCA Red Seal)

Looking for musicians to jam with in or near Providence RI
I just logged in for the first time in over a year, clicked on "View your posts", and realized that I had totally forgotten about this Looking for musicians to jam with in Boston/Providence area thread that I had posted back in Jan 2007. Watts & the RI Phil played the "Emperor" Cto
I saw Andre Watts and the Rhode Island Philharmonic perform Beethoven's piano concerto #5 last night. It was disappointing. Watts demonstrated plenty of virtuosity but little else. The tempo didn't change the slightest bit throughout each movement. The middle movement was particularly bad -- it was ...

I'm familiar with two Bernstein opera recordings. "Carmen" with a surprisingly good Marilyn Horne worked very well. I just bought this 1972 "Carmen" last week and have been listening to it five times a day. I'm not picky at all about the vocalists, so I focus mainly on the orchestral parts. Bernste...

Looking for musicians to jam with in Boston/Providence area

I have it too. It's preferable to the RCA version because the memory lapses in the Chopin Second Sonata aren't edited out.Holden Fourth wrote:I have the Russian revelation version which has all the Chopin but not the Villa-Lobos.

I seldom warm up to Hamelin's usually dull playing, but I quite enjoyed his live performance in Boston of three pieces from Iberia. So I will definitely try to get a copy of this. BMG Music Club has been able to license many of Hamelin's recent recordings from Hyperion, and if they succeed again BMG...

[quote="Lance"]The UNIVERSAL Group is issuing 1) an 11-CD set on Decca of Friedrich Gulda's Beethoven recordings, some of which include Beethoven violin sonatas with Ruggiero Ricci.
