The point I was referring to was that American usage considers this correct. You said it, not I. Ralph locutus, causa finita.npwparis wrote:I made a point, did I? I thought I discovered in the end that disinterested had a chequered history with both meanings. Ralph wouldn't misuse a word.
What a burden to lay on the poor guy.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

You flunked the test. Ralpholatry wins over insistence on correct usage. I will never be "disinterested" in the latter.npwparis wrote:Ralph will survive. He's a New Yorker and a lawyer.

I'm not sure you're following me. As I remember, it was established at the time I brought this up that disinterested had long meant the same as uninterested and that the insistence on the distinction was relatively modern and thus relatively misguided.
"L'usage est le roi des langues." I dare say I said that at the time, too. All I now seem to do is repeat myself.

Yes, and maybe I came back with something similar about the distinction between enormousness and enormity. Sorry. Giddy day.npwparis wrote:I'm not sure you're following me. No, of course not. I said 'deadwood.' Anyone who's posted within the last several months was a keeper. We have a lot of people who registered in weird alphabets or never posted at all or were dead, as in the case of the dear departed [snip]. So I cut 'em. They can always re-register. Well, maybe not [snip] . . . Besides, if he returned to speak to any of us on this side of the veil, I'm sure it would be over on GMG and not here.npwparis wrote:So that's why I had to register anew.Corlyss_D wrote:I was wondering that the other day while I was trolling the memberlist to prune the deadwood.

Cheniston is alive and well?
After a period of ill health, followed by over activity, I was forced to reconsider my activities.
Now that all that is sorted out I am back.
I have missed this board and intend to watch it every day from now on. As someone mentioned I did post on the "other board" not because of anything sinister, It is that I have several old friends who post there.
Now we should encourage more violin topics here.
Lance, thank you for your kind e-mail, it was good to know that one is appreciated.
Ralph, watch out I look forward to our forthcoming badinage.
Anyway, fella's thanks for missing me.
I am going to post one item I posted on T.O.B as it will be an introduction and I hope elicit some replies.
I am now on SKYPE as violinlands, I would love to hear from some of you.

That is very kind of you Ralph. I shall post as often as I can, but my principle remains the same as before, I will only post when I have something to say.Ralph wrote:Well this is double good news! Cheniston has recovered from ill health AND is back!
Welcome-I've missed yourt posrts.
Other than that it will be an interesting article I have found on the net.
Perhaps something controversial will revive interest in the violin.
What do you think?

Well, you could fly over here and interview Mr. Axelrod in prison about his valuation of those pesky violins.

You are nobody in the violin dealers world if you don't go to jail it would seem. This is one way to pay the highest price.Ralph wrote:

When my law school was new the dean asked me to check out a union leader who was offering us quite a donation. I obtained his CV (resume) and with my lawyer's eagle eye I noted a four-year, mid-career, apparent gap. A few inquiries brought me the desired information and we declined his offer.

Is this the new Cheniston, quick with repartee and the bon mot?
Once again, it's great to welcome yet another familiar name back to the forum after a long absence. You have been missed.
