BBC television Beethoven-fest

Post by Diogenes » Tue May 24, 2005 4:32 pm

As well as the R3 Beethoven marathon, what I think is particularly exciting are the television broadcasts on BBC2 and BBC4, starting next week, including rare telecasts from the BBC vaults.

Schedule highlights include:

"The Genius of Beethoven"
- docu-drama complemented by performances/analyses.

Barenboim on Beethoven
- DB gives a piano masterclass on Beethoven's piano sonatas, recorded at Symphony Hall, Chicago earlier this year. Further to the info on the BBC4 site, the students include Lang Lang.

Beethoven Archive Classics: rare broadcasts of concerts including
Violin Concerto - Yehudi Menuhin (1962)
Symphonies 4,5,6 - Sir Roger Norrington, Leopold Stokowski, Colin Davis (1990, 1969, 2001)
Piano Concertos 1,2,3,4,5 - Murray Perahia (1989)

Well the TV programs won't be available here.

I think this marathon is a bit much.

I'm WAY behind the technological curve. I don't know how to download anything. :)

Saw this tonight. Really fascinating and instructive to watch and listen to DB coaching Lang Lang on the structuring and interpretation of the Appassionata.

DB is an excellent teacher - criticism and praise and exchange of ideas in equal measure.

The other two masterclass students were Jonathan Biss (USA) and David Kadouch (France), who I am not familiar with but they were very talented too.

A very enjoyable program indeed.
