Happy Birthday, CvD!

Post by Ken » Tue Sep 08, 2009 10:06 am

A thread especially for Chalkie: ;)

Image

Today is the 80th birthday of my favourite conductor, Herr Maestro Christoph von Dohnanyi. I read a very good article about the Maestro in today's Süddeutsche Zeitung and had intended on translating it into English for the forum, but the text is unfortunately only available online to newspaper subscribers. If I can find a way of getting hold of the article in the next few days, I'll append it to this thread. As for now, I'll quote the somewhat less well-known Mannheimer Morgen:
Mannheimer Morgen, 8.

English Translation wrote: The Sound Technician with Competence and Charisma

At 27 years of age, he was the youngest General Music Director in Germany. Today Christoph von Dohnányi, one of the greatest conductors of his generation, is celebrating his 80th birthday. Even today is he driven by the same relentless aesthetic elan that so characteristically fuelled his European and international career. Born in 1929, the son of Hans von Dohnányi, a freedom fighter and jurist who was executed by the Third Reich in 1945, Dohnányi can never be accused of indecision and half-hearted opportunistic tactics.

Objective and Precise

His form of music-making has always been marked by a sharp perspective and by objectivity and precision. As he had already done as the Director of the Cleveland Orchestra between 1984 and 2002, Dohnányi has aimed for clear programming and unapologetic strategies for quality improvement since taking thepodium of the NDR-Sinfonieorchester in Hamburg in 2004. "The NDR Orchestra is a very good orchestra. We have accomplished a lot. But contentment isn't my profession," says Dohnányi.

If the Conductor gives up the NDR-Orchester to his successor Thomas Hengelbrock at the beginning of the 2011/12 season, the great ensemble should, as is Dohnányi's objective, be available in "very well-conditioned form." In Hamburg, Dohnányi had already caused a furor in 1977 when, as Manager of the Staatsoper, he fought for a contemporary musical theatre. In 1982, The Cleveland Orchestra in the USA finally welcomed the charismatic sound technician in with open arms.

In Hamburg, where his brother Klaus was once mayor, Dohnanyi was one of the first to stand up for the building of the spectacular new Elbphilharmonie. "Such a building," says Dohnányi, who is always engaged in cultural politics, "will give an enormous impetus to the [city's] entire musical life."
Pardon my poor translation.

So, who will be celebrating the occasion with me by listening to the Schumann Cycle? 8)

Indeed, Happy Birthday to Maestro von Dohnányi!

I shan't be listening to the Schumann, but MENDELSSOHN and BEETHOVEN!

•Mendelssohn: "Hymn of Praise" Symphony on Decca
•Beethoven: "Emperor" Concerto with Robert Casadesus on Medici Masters (live performance!)

I can certainly endorse your selection of the Mendelssohn (his set on Decca remains, along with the Masur, my reference), but I can't admit to knowing about that recording of the Emperor Concerto. Is it relatively easy to get hold of, Lance?

Chalkie, the Beethoven Symphonies on Telarc are literally give aways in their latest 2 CD reissue reincarnations ( 3 separate sets) Far from a first choice, but the sound is typical Telarc. :D :D :D :D
But, the Mendelssohn is top notch. The first two Mendelssohn symphonies 2 CD set is very hard to obtain now, though.... 8)

Ken, yes, it should be relatively easy to find this one. It's available in the general catalogue in Europe and the USA. Medici Arts [032] is a tribute to pianist Robert Casadesus and contains:

[1] Mozart Piano Concerto #23 w/Cologne Orchestra, J. L. Jochum, conductor
[2] Beethoven "Emperor" Concerto w/ COlogne Orchestra, Christoph Dohnányi, conductor
[3] Ravel: Piano Concerto for the Left-Hand w/Hermann Scherchen, conductor

All are live performances. Medici Arts is the same company that puts together the famous BBC Legends CDs. The releases even look similar.

Well, I now understand why my initial searches for the record were unsuccessful; I was typing Casadesus's name incorrectly! You're right, the disc is available at Amazon, and they even have audio samples available online. Thanks for the recommendation!
