What would we do if we ...
... didn't have CMG at these late hours. As I view various threads and see who's on line, it amazes me the number of people who are on board. I often wonder, if we weren't on with CMG, what might we be doing ... watching TV, practising, reading, sleeping? How appreciative I am of the fact that we have the ability to exchange ideas and messages this way, with so many people, all over the world, too! I wonder what Chopin, Schumann, Beethoven, Mozart or anybody would think our abilities to communicate today.

Well, if not for CMG, I'd right now likely be softening my brain by dinkering around with my new DVD-R recorder even more that I AM!
Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease, and quits the memory with difficulty.

My life seemed pretty full before. I think this has replaced (and more) the time I spent following Manchester United on a couple of blogs. But this is vastly more interesting and intelligent and addictive, and I am so glad I found you all. My thanks to the hard-working moderators.
I run a blog on a different subject which sometimes gets very, very busy, and I appreciate the time you spend. And much more graciously than I do - I can't resist acerbic replies.

I'd be relaxing or playing music in my near-inimitable bad way, wishing there was a music forum in which to pass the time.

Yes, indeed. Posting and asking questions here have become an integral part of my musical life. Deepest thanks and admiration to Corlyss and Lance---and to every contributor here--for the many happy hours I've enjoyed---and those yet to come!

Re: What would we do if we ...
Whether at home or in my office, the computer is always on and CMG is, of course, instantly available. I spent most time at home listening to music and reading so checking CMG takes no time from anything else. Basically the same in the office. While I have the capability to check into CMG when untethered from a laptop or PC through my BlackBerry, I never do. So when I leave the house on a weekend morning or take a day off, I don't think of CMG until I return very late at night.

Hi Lance, I usually browse CMG from mid-night to two in the morning, when I should be in bed of course. I am suffering from sleep deprivation since joining CMG and all the happier for it.Lance wrote:... didn't have CMG at these late hours. Uh well, I think Chopin and Mozart with their patrician views would not be caught dead here. Beethoven would probably be more like that grumpy old Word Maestro or Mark Anstendig (no longer here - rest in peace)... Schumann and some of the others were a little more accessible, but with Clara beating Rob't. over the head to compose compose compose and with all those kids running around, I doubt if he would have time...same with Bach...

The NYT Sunday magazine had an interesting article this past Sunday on this phenomenon. It viewed our online relationships as kind of an extended community outside our most immediate friends and relatives - e.g. those with whom we have face time. The article focused on the virtual communities on Facebook and also on a new program called Twitter. The analogy presented, and I think it's a good one, is that these on-line communities are like or replace the people we'd know living in a small town. And the down side is also like living in small town, where everyone knows a little too much about everyone else.
Mind you, Face Book and Twitter are a little more up close and personal than here at CMG.

Twitter is getting a big boost from Rick Sanchez over at CNN. He uses it for interactive, on-air communications with his viewers.slofstra wrote:The NYT Sunday magazine had an interesting article this past Sunday on this phenomenon. That's not quite true, many of us choose not to be identified when we are online, only Lance and Corlyss can see ALL of us...Sylph wrote:I never see more than 7–10 people around here.Lance wrote:... didn't have CMG at these late hours. I've seen 40 or 50 online at once, but you cannot see it since many go hidden and don't want to be seen. As Chalkie mentioned, Corlyss and I always know who is on CMG. We are among the most popular classical music sites around and we've been around among the longest. I also think this is the friendliest site of all of 'em, wouldn't you say, Sylph?Sylph wrote:I never see more than 7–10 people around here.Lance wrote:... didn't have CMG at these late hours. It's great - I love reading through the threads. I don't know what I would do if I used the time for something else. Probably napping I guess.

I would probably be less knowledgable because I learned many new music-related matters on here. It's like my music cnn at times xD
(I'm a horn player, and I take 'offense' to yet I merely lmao at these jokes. )
How do horn players traditionally greet each other?
1. "Hi. I played that last year."
2. "Hi. I did that piece in junior high."
How many French horn players does it take to change a lightbulb?
Just one, but he'll spend two hours checking the bulb for alignment and leaks.
How do you get your viola section to sound like the horn section?
Have them miss every other note.
Orchestra Personnel Standard for a horn player:
Lifts buildings and walks under them.
Kicks locomotives off the tracks.
Catches speeding bullets in teeth and eats them.
Freezes water with a single glance.
Is God.
