I am mildly ashamed to admit that Wagner plays a significant role in my conversion to CM appreciation. I am ashamed because it was via the most predictable source, namely Apocalypse Now

Furthermore, Haitink's Ring highlights disc was one of my purchases when I invested in my first three 'taster' CM CD's (knowing it could go either way, and turn out that I wasn't suited to serious CM listening at all)

All essential recordings Darren. All I Puritani needs is the 4 greatest singers in the World, and that´s just what it got in 1953 with Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Rolando Panerai and Nicola Rossi-Lemeni. That was Callas´first recording with EMI by the way. The Cherubini Requiem with Markevitch is wonderful too.

Britten's best heard as a Composer, his Bach leaves a lot to be desired, the kind of recording that make you aware very quickly that there are much, much, better ones out there...

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. The first two concerti are "loose" and lacklustre, and the flabby horns sound as though they've been overdubbed. The remaining four Brandenburgs are better, workaday recordings that are acceptable for the time being.

I've heard good things about the Klemperer, although I found the Karajan offering fairly turgid, with rather slow tempi in places.. I exchanged it for the Herreweghe version a while ago, and felt I came out of the deal well. Kubelik's is a version I've yet to hear.. but one day...

I compared the Kubelik to the Klemperer and Karajan versions because they are all "old school" Brahms, more recent hip versions like the Herreweghe and Gardiner have different priorities and therefore are not strictly comparable. The Klemperer is thought by many as the classic recording, the library choice, and maybe it still is, but Kubelik offers a kinder and gentler reading, superbly sung by the Choir of the Bavarian Radio, and it is very eloquent too, Kubelik works his special magic and the results are stunning. I´d certainly recommend it Jared

it's funny. What you have said here is exactly how I feel about his (for me, underrrated) set of Mahler Symphonies, when similarly contrasted with the 'old school'.. I'm quite fond of his interpretations here, and was quite surprised at how good they were, when I first heard them... as I'd previously, naively had him down as being at his best in Czech repertoire... not the case, I see.

If anyone were to ask me to recommend a complete Mahler cycle I would direct them to Kubelik...
