Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
In the U.S., the tooth fairy levies a 0.1% excise tax on the sale of toothpaste and toothbrushes. This is a terrible way to do it, because falling sales of toothpaste are correlated with increased tooth loss, and greater outlays by the tooth fairy industry. After the gingivitis crisis of the 70's the tooth fairy administration has used advanced financial instruments to limit exposure to dental fluctuations.Jared wrote:one can but live in hope... when I was a kid, I often wondered why the tooth fairy was suffering from the results of an economic slow down, at the precise moment he passed over our house..Fergus wrote:I hope that Santa will oblige and not disappoint youJared wrote: I had been thinking of asking for the Hickox set (Chandos) for Xmas, actually...

Re: What NEW discs/music are you adding to your collection?
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on that, they are stodgy and old fashioned readings that have not lasted well over time, George Szell's Haydn Set is one that Sean should get next, IMHO of course...Lance wrote:Seán, I hope you have Sir Thomas Beecham's EMI discs of the London symphonies, too! His are kind of a paradigm amongst recordings.

Well gentlemen now you have me in a quandry. I had both sets in my hot little hand yesterday but bought the Marriner's Haydn Creation disc instead. I probably would be inclined to buy the Szell as I like almost everything that the Hungarian maestro did, do you concur Lance?Chalkperson wrote:I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on that, they are stodgy and old fashioned readings that have not lasted well over time, George Szell's Haydn Set is one that Sean should get next, IMHO of course...Lance wrote:Seán, I hope you have Sir Thomas Beecham's EMI discs of the London symphonies, too! I'm sure the Szell is good, if is anything like his Mozart. Not complete, but I've enjoyed the Fey/Heidelberg recordings on Hanssler.Seán wrote:Well gentlemen now you have me in a quandry. Absolutely, a wonderful series of discs, but, at full price, I was commenting on Szell vs Beecham because of the cost, Fey's are like a breath of fresh air when it comes to Haydn...nut-job wrote: I've enjoyed the Fey/Heidelberg recordings on Hanssler.
