Franz Liszt Vs Parrot

Post by THEHORN » Tue Dec 21, 2010 6:45 pm

The other day at my classical music program at United Hebrew I was playing splendid live recordings of the two Liszt piano concertos on the BBC Classics label played by the late, lamented English pianist John Ogdon.
Everything was going fine, and the stubborn lady loved the music and the performances. Then all of a sudden towards the end of the second, the dear parrot in the cage where we listen started squalking loudly to every one's dismay. Oh well. You can't accuse parrots of having good taste in music. Or was he expressing his approval ?

Oops. The label's correct name is BBC Legends. Lots of great performances on this label.

Indeed, it's one of the best-ever live-performance labels taking most of their recordings from the original sources. Since they moved to Germany, we haven't seen much from them, or Medici Arts for that matter. I have around 255 issues from this series and have never regretted having one of them. I hope this label is resurrected soon.

They have run out of really good stuff, Medici is kind of taking over, as is the Bavarian RSO although their recordings are much newer, Orfeo still comes up with the goods though...

I think the parrot was saying that everyone should try to suck seed in music!

As a teenager I had a parakeet who ALWAYS chirped (not squawked!) when I put Wagner's "Der fliegende Holländer" Overture on. To other composers he was pretty much mute.

Yup, it's about time these parrots were house-trained in "Do not squeak unless you're squawken to."

Sorry to say, but my friend at Medici tell me that the BBC Legends series is done and no plans to resurrect it at this time.
