Ina Souez - and Spike Jones

Post by John F » Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:14 pm

Ina Souez, an American, was the leading soprano at the first Glyndebourne Festivals in the 1930s and sang in the first recordings ever made of "Don Giovanni" (as Donna Anna) and "Cosi fan tutte" (as Fiordiligi).

When World War II began she returned to New York to enlist in the Women's Army Corps, and when peace came, in addition to singing Fiordiligi with the short-lived New Opera Company conducted by Fritz Busch, she was a vocalist with Spike Jones for 10 years and more. (Thanks to AlanM for bringing this to my attention.) Her explanation: ""Spike was offering me some real money." Here's their recording of Arditi's "Il bacio," or as the label has it, "Ill Barkio."

Here's her NY Times obituary:

I guess John figured we might never have heard of Ina Souez, but I had also never heard of Spike Jones (I'm sure my father will disown me). For the equally ignorant, it seems he is the one who is responsible for this:

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

While you can Google the answer, who knows which Spike Jones classic ends with the punchline: Beetlebomb. I know because I own the RCA LP called "Spike Jones is Murdering the Classics"
