Amazon raised their CD shipping rate to $3.99 (third party)

Post by Lance » Wed Apr 24, 2013 8:53 am

Looks that way. It used to be you could get some good bargains on CDs. But even if you order two CDs from the same place, you will be charged $3.99 twice, and they ship it in the same package! I guess we fight these high shipping charges by simply NOT buying for a while. I didn't like the original $2.98 shipping fee for one CD either, multiplied by the same number of CDs ordered from third-party buyers but shipped in the same package for sometimes the same price for shipping one. Buyer beware!

That's not what amazon.com says on its web site. Here's their table of shipping rates:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/ ... eId=468636

If I understand this, there's a per shipment charge of $2.99 for CDs (their cheapest rate) plus a per item charge of $0.99, for a total of $3.98 for two CDs in the same shipment.

There has always been an option that gives you free shipping with certain conditions which aren't onerous. Certainly Amazon Canada still has it.

That may be correct for product you buy from Amazon directly in the way of CDs. But THIRD PARTY purchases are showing $3.99 and it doubles if you get two from the same third party. I am on Amazon's PRIME system to get merchandise within two days with no added postal costs and that yearly fee is $79 unless it has changed recently. Would someone verify if I am reading correctly? If the $3.99 is correct per item even from the same supplier ordered at the same time, then one must look and choose more carefully to stay within some kind of budget.

Ah, you didn't say that - you asked if Amazon has raised their shipping rate. Amazon doesn't set the prices including shipping for other companies, I should think, but I don't suppose all of them have the same policy either. If you can avoid the specific vendor that wanted to charge you extra, you may get a better deal.

I ordered a CD last week and was charged $2.99, I just looked at the current price and it was $3.99.

But, the postage on that CD I received was $3.43 so given $3.99 includes handling, and packing etc, $3.99 does not seem unreasonable.

I believe that the Postage rate for a CD has been increased, at least that what I read on another forum, something about it now being treated as a package, rather than a letter I think...

I just checked and can confirm that Amazon.com did raise the shipping charge for CDs purchased from outside seller by $1. This BTW is a 33% increase :x

Also, my best friend used to work for a major Amazon.com third-party seller and I know for a fact that all shipping charges are set by Amazon. There are only two things a seller can do about them if he wants to offer his potential buyers a break:

- ship his merchandise to an Amazon.com warehouse from which all the orders will now be filled; this means that all items will become eligible for Amazon.com free shipping (provided they meet the usual criteria)

- refund part or all of the shipping charge if, let's say, a buyer purchases two or more items at the same time.

That's it - the shipping charges themselves are determined and computed by Amazon.com (they automatically add them to the order's total and then pay the same amount to the sellers).

The best way to fight this policy is to look for items that are fulfilled by Amazon.com and thus eligible for their free shipping program, or to email the seller and ask if a shipping discount can be offered if you buy two or more items to be shipped together in the same package.

Some of the amazon resellers, like Better World Books as a notable example, also run their own web sites, often with different pricing and shipping terms. If you frequently deal with a particular 3rd party it's worth checking around the web to see if they have an additional web presence.

Let me get this straight...........

If you order more than one item from an Amazon 3rd party, such as MovieMars, IDeals or Classical Music Sperstore, we will now be charged $3.99 for each separate order? For example a single chamber music CD and a single orchestral CD. That would now be $7.98? Is this right......Please help Me. This sounds very harsh. I have been paying $2.98 per CD order. Even if all of the CDs are shipped together. By the way, does my being a Prime customer matter?

Being a PRIME customer of Amazon—such as myself—if I order Amazon product, the PRIME rate applies and no additional postal fees are added. If, however, you order items on the same order as Amazon that comes from a third party, you will pay the $3.99 shipping fee PER ITEM. As someone pointed out, that's harsh and makes buying from third parties less attractive. You will note that some PRIME products from Amazon are almost double (or more) of buying a "new" or "used" product from the third party. In that case, the $3.99 plus the cost of the item is still far cheaper than buying it new from Amazon via their PRIME-priced offering (unless you MUST have the product in two days). No doubt Amazon will raise their PRIME rate for a year if they have not already done so. (Last I knew, it was $79 and is automatically charged to your card when the year expires unless you advise them you no longer want PRIME service.) It pays to study the costs closely. In most cases, shipping one CD from to anywhere in the USA from a third party does not cost the full original $2.98 fee (including the shipping bag). On SETS, however, the fee can cost the shipper more to pay a higher postage rate and thus they lose money on that deal. Amazon also charges tax on orders within New York State even though they have no facilities in New York State. I read recently where there is a bill to charge ALL Amazon customers tax no matter what state you are in (this would apply for all sellers whose gross is less than $1 million.) That tax money would then be returned to the state to which it applies. (Who is going to check THAT out!?!).

Suggestion: Try alibris.com. Many of the top 3rd party sellers from Amazon also sell through this site. Classical Music Superstore - the best of the lot - certainly does. And Alibris reduces the shipping charges on second and subsequent discs in the same order (from the same seller, of course).

Thank you for the thumbs up. I will check Alibris out, my friend. 8)

The fact is that Amazon is not out to do third party vendors any favours. Every sale through them is one less sale out of their own inventory. The problem is that Amazon's presence on the web is huge, and so it would be difficult for very many of them to pull out. But it may happen; the other alternative is ebay, and ebay allows you to set your own shipping prices. Perhaps we'll see more small vendors on that site.

Not true any more, CD's are no longer classed as letters so postage rates increased, it now costs $3.43 to ship a CD, I just received one earlier this week...
