The Forgotten Monsieur Enescu

Post by dulcinea » Fri Sep 22, 2017 4:25 pm

During his lifetime, Enescu was widely admired by such people as Pau Casals and by Ysaye; nowadays he is remembered solely for two rhapsodies that deserve a well earned rest. :(
What do you recommend of him? YOUTUBE has several symphonies by him that would fit perfectly in MUSIC CHOICE. :D

Oedipe
Jose van Dam
Foster/Monte Carlo
EMI 1989

A somewhat obscure 20th century operatic masterpiece.

There's not too much of Enescu I have acquired over the years. I still love his Romanian Rhapsodies, however. They make ones blood move! There seems to be some interest in his Violin Sonata No. 2. Some years ago, I think it was the Erato label who issued a good deal of his orchestral music. I was almost interested but never followed through.

Dinicu's Ciocarlia makes my blood boil. Violin virtuoso Enescu covered the work brilliantly.

Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major 'Villageoise', cond. Constantin Silvestri

Impressions of Childhood, op 28

The beautiful Violin Sonata 3 wth Enescu & Lipatti

String Octet, op 7 - age 19.

A pre- warhorse performance of RR1 George Georgescu, cond. whose Electrecord recordings are well worth seeking out on YT, along with those of fellow Romanian Constantin Silvestri. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... ectrecords

Enescu mentored Menuhin.

Thanks for all that wonderful material. It will take me a few days, but I'll get to it. I have the symphonies on Erato and find them convincing, but not great music.

Enescu's Dixtuor for winds, op. 14, 1906 (2 fl., ob, E.H., 2 cl., 2 hn, 2 bsn) is one of the glories of wind chamber music, and a very complex piece to put together.

Black lives matter.

Thanks for the recommendation, some of my Romanian pals on Symphonyshare having guided me to his lesser-known music. Also, the talented kids at the Cleveland Institute of Music perform his chamber music all the time.
