Young violinist Augustin Hadelich plays my fav VC, the Sibelius, at 2019 Salzburg Festival, with Orchestre symphonique de l'ORF under Kerem Hassan , also Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony ( I did not hear ) :

Hadelich’s 2014 Avie cd of the Sibelius with Lintu / Liverpool got largely rave reviews at Amazon-US. I have not heard the cd. To my ear, there is an austerity,urgency,darkness to the Heifetz/Beecham recording which despite dated sound remains my fav, but Hadelich very fine here.

The late Koho Uno in 1995 conducting the Shinsei Nihhon Symphony Orchestra: LvB Sym 2 and 6. Top-notch interpretations by a celebrated Japanese music critic turned conductor in the vein of Mengelberg, Knappertsbusch and Furtwangler. I had never heard of him in either role.

Pianist Diane Andersen’s 1996 Arcobaleno cd of solo Bartok, 14 Bagatelles,Op.6 ( ca. 1909-10 ), 4 Dirges,Op.9a (ca.1909 ), and 8 Improvisations,Op.20 (1920 ).The cd also has his Piano Sonata , but I find the other works more interesting.

Dunno. IIRC, (having listened to the audio w/o watching), it unfolded in one long sequence. It has been posted on symphonyshare if you have access to that forum.

My daughter and I heard Goode live in Severance Hall around that time in an all-Beethoven recital. Introspective playing, as in this recital, cf. the soul-stirring Bach in this Paris recital!

All very well done, especially Richard-Hamelin. I do have an lp of the Hummel A minor PC (Op.85 or 87) , but this broadcast was my first hearing of the F major Hummel ( amazing slow mov.) .This concerto served as an interesting “bridge” between the Mozart and Chopin. All 3 concertos, composers, “simpatico” , or “kindred spirits” . I suspect the Hummel rarely heard live.

I have the Bavouzet/Bartok CD and understand why he won. It's a superb recording, which I gave five stars when it came out not too long ago.

Was not really anxious to hear the Grieg PC, but I do follow this pianist and Vanska was conducting, as well one my favs, Sibelius # 5 , on the program ( plus , at one time I tried to play Lisiecki's encore here ). Glad I did hear. Very fine playing throughout the Concerto, esp. 2nd,3rd movs. Lisiecki will take his place among Canada’s great ones,I believe. Detailed and sharply etched , yet expansive , reading by Vanska of the 5th,great playing by LPO.

Interesting 2-piano recital. I had never heard the Janacek in any version, nor the Brahms Quartet in this version.This Brahms version works well I thought, bit darker, more dramatic, slow mov. in this version suggesting more his late solo piano works yet to arrive, at least as played here. I did not hear the other 2 works.

Pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati plays Bach’s 3rd and 4th Partitas, an interesting “March,Intermezzo and Waltz “ by Thomas Blomenkamp ( 1955 - ), a composer, work, not previously known to me, and Schubert’s D.958 Sonata, all in Bremen, 2019. My first hearing of this pianist.Posted because , per the BBC presenter , Andras Schiff is very enthusiastic about her Bach playing. I prefer a softer edge here, but , as Schiff apparently notes in his autobiography,what do I know ? I did not hear the Schubert.

Yesterday's two-piano concert was a real winner, many thanks! The Janacek was a very effective piece, and new to me. The Brahms was well-known and loved: I have this Martha Argerich disc pictured below, also available in her boxed set of Warner recordings. The Rachmaninoff was strangely incomplete: they omitted the finale, which is quite a showpiece!

My recording is Pascal Roge, a little more reserved. Surprised to hear from the presenter Poulenc dismissed this composition as not very good.
