Here's a soprano we don't often talk about but should. "Mathis is a conviction singer. Everything she tackles is done with her whole heart and being." —Gramophone
"In celebration of her 80th birthday, this -CD edition collects many of Edith Mathis's most treasured recordings of opera, oratorio and song. The captivating Swiss soprano's versatility is displayed in Bach with Richter, Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss with Bohm, Weber with [Carlos] Kleiber, Berlioz with Ozawa and the role she created in Henze's 1965 opera Die junge Lord. The collection also includes her complete Schumann song recordings with Christoph Eschenbach and, for the first time on CD, a selection from Wolf's Italianisches Liederbuch."
While the set name "The Art of Edith Mathis" speaks for itself, we get excerpts from the operas and oratorios, wherein after hearing, you may want to secure the complete recording. The song selections are outstanding. Transfers excellent, and the accompanying booklet gives full details on the artist.
Collaborators on these discs aside from Eschenbach include Karl Engel, Wolfgang Sawallisch, pianists; Brigitte Fassbaender, Peter Schreier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, singers; Barenboim, Karl Bohm, von Dohnanyi, Hager, Jena, Klee, Carlos Kleiber, Rafael Kubelik, Charles Mackerras, Neville Marriner, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Richter and Wolfgang Sawalisch, and many others.
