Elgar chamber works live

Post by Rach3 » Tue May 07, 2019 4:28 pm

What a treat to hear his smaller scale, but intense, works, my first hearing of the quartet, sonata. I have a recording of the quintet ; downloaded today from Presto a recording of the sonata, a remarkable work ( as is the quintet) and performances here , not to be missed IMHO :

Per the BBC :
“Tonight's ( May 7,2019 ) concert celebrates 100 years since the first performances of the three major chamber works by Sir Edward Elgar from a club he founded, Malvern Concert Club. One of these, the Piano Quintet in A minor, he dedicated to the Brodsky Quartet and it is their modern counter-parts who perform tonight. “

Elgar: String Quartet in E minor, Op 83
Elgar: Violin Sonata in E minor, Op 82
Elgar: Piano Quintet in A minor, Op 84

Brodsky Quartet
Martin Roscoe (piano)

The piano Quintet has long been a favorite work: the slow movement is, when done right, very moving. Thanks for posting this. The Quartet is also a strong work, rarely performed. If you want a CD, here's my recommendation:
