Pianist Igor Levit live

Post by Rach3 » Thu May 23, 2019 10:39 am

My first hearing of pianist Igor Levit in Schubert, and here perhaps my fav Schubert sonata, May 21,2019, in Vilabertran,Spain. Not stated whose arrangement of the Mahler, perhaps his his own (? ). Might want to skip over the Mahler. Levit keeps a tight leash on the Schubert, but well-played , and I enjoyed even if not “ learning “ anything new.

Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Felix
Lieder ohne Worte op.19 - nr.1 + nr.4 ; Lieder ohne Worte op.38 - nr.6

Mahler, Gustav
Symfonie nr.10 Adagio (Arr.)

Schubert, Franz
Sonate voor piano nr.20, D.959 in A

Schumann, Robert
Kinderszenen, op.15 - nr.13, "Der Dichter spricht"

Interesting that you brought Igor Levit's name up. I have only a two-disc CD set from Sony Classical from Germany [42445] entitled "Life," only because of a most interesting program spread over the discs. I was impressed with his pianism, but haven't acquired anything else by him - as yet. This set contains music by Bach/Busoni, Bach/Brahms (Chaconne for left hand), Schumann's Ghost Variations, Rzewski's A Mensch, Wagner/Liszt selections, more Busoni and Bill Evans' Peace Piece. He has a number of recordings out. The one that interests me most is his Sony recording of Beethoven's piano sonatas 28 through 32 inclusive.

rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]

I do not own that LvB cd, but heard a live broadcast of his Opa.109 - 111 as the only works on the recital, as I recall played without interruption. Excellent. I believe the cd you mention got mostly great reviews.Fww.

Levit won the 2016 Gramophone CD of the Year for 3 sets of variations: Goldberg, Diabelli and Rzewski's The People United Will Never Be Defeated. I am waiting to find this second-hand somewhere.
The CD you mention Lance I do have, and am very impressed.

I listened to the recital posted above, including the Mahler, and was quite impressed. Also, Lance, I may acquire the 2CD set you mentioned. He's quite a musician. Anyone who says there's no great music happening today just isn't listening!

My first hearing I believe of Levit in a Romantic concerto, here the Schumann live with German Orchestra of Berlin under Robin Ticciati, very spirited, yet light-handed and not without emotion, especially fine last mov. :

Unusal encore, Alkan’s Prelude, “ Song of the Mad Women by the Seaside.”
