Horowitz, recording 1928, was not aware he had recorded this work :

Cziffra, live video, ca. 1960's ? :

I was fortunate a couple years ago to hear live , in person ,Benjamin Grosvenor play this Etude as an encore after a performance of Saint-Saens PC # 2.

Rachmaninoff apparently recorded the work in 1921, but I could not find at YT.

This Dohnányi Etude #6 appears on Naxos 8.110696, but near as I can determine, this is the only place on CD it can be found. It may be in one of the huge RCA sets and sometimes I don't manifest all the composers. That CD also contains other very early recordings of Horowitz.

I must say it doesn't appeal to me. From what I've heard, Dohnanyi wasn't at his best in this kind of music; larger forms suited him better.

Benjamin G played this as an encore throughout that season - superbly. His main encore the following season was Grieg’s Erotik (which Michelangeli played and recorded. This season his main encore is Gnomenreigen.

I tend to agree, John F … however, I understand why this piece would be attractive to Horowitz! His fingers literally fly.
