Deep sorrow: Mariss Jansons has died

By norman lebrecht
on December 1, 2019

Mariss Jansons died last night at his home in St Petersburg.

He was 76.

The cause was a longstanding heart condition.

He had been ill frequently this year, collapsing in the Vienna Philharmonic podium and cancelling a Bavarian Radio concert at Carnegie Hall.

I was just about to turn in for the night and then I read this. Even though expected it's still very upsetting. What a wonderful man. This just touches my heart, every time:

He will be very much missed.

Totally agree. Listening to his recordings, I never had a major disagreement with any of his interpretations. He will be greatly missed.

When I still lived in Seattle in the 90s, He & his Pittsburgh Symphony appeared at Benaroya Hall. They concluded with Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. The normally noisy & impolite Seattle audience was so quiet--especially in the creepy sections--that you could've heard a pin drop. Gerard Schwarz never made it part of his repertory, and no guest conductor programmed it, ever. So they knew they were in for a treat.
Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease, and quits the memory with difficulty.

I listened to his Dvorak 7 yesterday with the Oslo orchestra. Very fine, idiomatic, nicely shaped.

I heard Maris Jansons once in Malmö conducting the Moscow Phil. Orch. in Sjostakovitj´s 7th symphony. I also got his great recordings of the Tjajkovskij- symphonies on Chandos. A monumentum aere perennius.
Kjell Nilsson.
Sweden.

That Shostakovich must have been awesome. I envy you for sure! 8)
