Edward H. Tarr has passed on

Post by david johnson » Thu Mar 26, 2020 3:01 am

Musicologist, author, and trumpeter Ed Tarr has died. He was from the USA, but lived in Switzerland. He recorded many Renaissance and Baroque natural trumpet pieces. His Hummel recording is the one I have always prefered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIHXmF1 ... TUUmAaq40s

Very sorry to hear this. I have a number of his recordings, many on LP (Nonesuch). Was his wife's name Elisabeth Westerholz or something like that? She was an organist and pianist. My preferred recording of the Hummel Concerto remains Armando Ghitalla with Pierre Monteux conducting the ad hoc orchestra for Cambridge Records. I believe that was the last recording ever made by Monteux.

I still have some of those Nonesuch LPs. Nothing wrong with Ghitalla :)

My favourite Hummel recording is by Wynton Marsalis. That said, I would like to hear Tarr's take on it but can't seem to find it online.
