I hadn't heard of him but he appeared at the Met 4 times-2 Iago's and 2 la forza Don Carlos-there are some clips at the link. Len

Review
"Every Otello needs an lago to catalyze the action; and baritone Silvano Carroli created a suave, Machiavellian villain. Using a velvet voice to conceal an iron heart, his insidious lago plotted the destruction of Otello with consummate guile. Carroli possesses an ideal Verdian voice with a range of tonal colors, technical control and easy top. His lago is the most satisfying conception to grace the current production."

I've never heard him either, Len.

Here's a rather clumsy hurried obituary from OPERAWIRE, with video clips from various performances. I have the video of Fanciulla with Neblitt and Domingo somewhere.

Brian I had looked at those clips and he sure looked like a Scarpia--wonder what his Iago was like! Regards, Len

I hadn’t heard of him either which makes three of us so where does the legendary status comefrom?

His name is new to me, too. I checked my artist catalogue and cannot find even one recording with his name showing. I ask the same question: Legendary?

I wasn't familiar with him either, but a bit of checking shows he had a major career primarily centered in Italy with occasional visits to other parts of the world. His recording of Tosca (as Scarpia) with Alexander Rhabari on Naxos is still in print after more than 25 years. Several DVDs are also in print.

It looks like most of his CDs are of live performances, including two performances of Otello from La Scala with Placido Domingo conducted by Carlos Kleiber. Unfortunately, finding those might take some work or some cash. :-)

His name may be more familiar to really serious opera aficionados and collectors.
