Please refrain from religious discussions.

Post by Agnes Selby » Fri May 28, 2010 4:38 pm

I respectfully ask the members of this board to refrain from
religious discussions at least for a while and allow the present
situation to cool down. Otherwise the pub will go down the gurgler
instead of having interesting discussions as we had in the past.

Religion is a personal and very private matter and should remain so
for the benefit of all members on this board.

Thank you,
Agnes.

P.S I have changed the title of this post !

I don't think it is "religious discussions" that we should refrain from. I think it's any kind of obnoxious/provocative/polemic post -- which IMO may be a political post as often as a religious one. And sometimes (rarely) about other subjects also.

I like your basic idea, but how about we target it where it belongs.

Never do. How about the Atheists stop their anti-religious threads, eh?

There is one serial pest, however, who lies and distorts and needs to be responded to.

Please refrain from political discussions. Or sports . . .

See how that goes. When you are a mod, you can enforce your desires. Create your own board and create your own rules or whatever.

This is what it is and I will continue to respond to the serial pest as I see fit, until banned. The mods won't do their job, so it will continue this way until they do.

Replying to him in a nasty off-color way doesn't do anything and won't do anything.

I don't know if anything would, but that sure won't.

I will continue as long as he posts here. Ignoring him hasn't worked for years now.

But it shouldn't be at the cost of sending our most valued people to the hospital because of high blood pressure. Kids! Take it easy!!!

I'm finding it quite relaxing, actually. Peace of mind and all that. Once one makes a simple choice, it's all downhill. Just wish others would get on board and get rid of the person ruining this forum. I respond, I do not provoke it.

He's not ruining the forum. In fact, IMO in a certain way, he lends it a certain "color." :)

The main problem is that people reply to him, which then enables him to reply to the reply, etc. etc., then reply to the reply to the reply -- and of course re-copying the whole sequence of posts each and every time.......

Let him do his posts. Just don't reply to them very much. Let them be. And this site will go on just fine.

But is that natural? It's the pub, right? (Saul seldom posts in the chatterbox)

Now, let's see. Somebody comes to you in a pub and, for the next half hour, you are exposed to his views and opinions and beliefs. Can you just relinquish your seat and, because of this exchange, say goodnight to the bar tender and go home?

Why do you have to do that? It's your night out!
Rather, tell the intruder to go and talk to another group, elsewhere, which is what I previously recommended.

If it was an actual Pub, he would have had his teeth kicked in many times over by now, and security would not allow him in again.

That's their job. They aren't doing it.

I'll have to be hypothetical since I don't go to pubs.

I'd pay no attention to the guy except maybe to glance at him and use him as material for talking to the other people.

And it's appreciated, I assure you. Still, we do not all share the same temperament (at least four of them, according to Hindemith!). While some people avoid threads because of their author and others comment on threads before reading them and others post identical threads because they don't read much at all, some are drawn to read what is posted daily, like anyone reading a newspaper ... in a pub!

CMG's forum software has a feature that allows you to filter out all posts by a member so you never see them at all. In CompuServe this was called a Twit List; here, it's been named Friends and Foes. Unfortunately, I think, because enmity only rarely comes into it, but the name doesn't matter, it's an option everyone has.

I have several CMG members in the latter list, and would have one more except that a certain forum moderator apparently can't be included. :)

How to do it:

At the top right of the screen, click on User Control Panel.

Under Options in the menu to the left, click on Friends & Foes, then Manage Foes.

Copy the handle of the CMG member whose posts you want to ignore, and paste it into the blank text box on the right. You can add more than one handle at a time; each goes on a separate line.

Click Submit to activate.

Once this is done, you won't see the text of any messages the "foe" may post, only a marker like this:
This post was made by Xxxxx who is currently on your ignore list. Display this post.
Clicking on Xxxxx displays the "foe's" profile. Clicking on "Display this post" does what it says, for this message and this viewing only.

I don't think Corlyss would agree with that kind of restriction, Mark, it's Corlyss's Pub and she is not available to give her opinion on this matter so let's not forget who runs/owns this place, she's unfortunately still sick and unable to type, I do agree with Agnes that his religious posts should be few in number for a little while...

Maybe we should give Saul a Sticky Thread, it would be permanent, he can change the Title as often as he wants and anyone who wants to ignore it can...we can give Jack Kelso a Schumann one while we are at it...

I tried making her a Foe before the Election, it did not work so I complained to her...she roared with laughter...then (luckily) she took a sabbatical...

BTW, John, everyone knows about the Foe feature and how to use it, this discussion is not about that, it's about the Old Rodney King Thing...people just ain't getting along with each other... :?

PS, Corlyss and I are actually very good friends now, despite what you may think, she is a very kind, caring, and compassionate person....

Did you misunderstand me, Chalkie?

I'm not talking about any official restriction. If we're talking about what approach people might choose to take, it doesn't depend on a moderator's agreement.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding you.......

They do now, if they're reading this thread. Otherwise, many probably don't even know the feature exists, as it's not provided in most online forums.

And if some people can't get along with each other, which as you say is what this discussion is about, it may be best just to keep out of each other's way.

For any one who's interested, there's an intriguing forum for discussing religion,theologyonline.com, which you can register for just like classicalmusicguide,to discuss religion ,politics and current events etc .
I'm on it. Try it.

I really am sorry, but the whole thing has gone beyond that.

Every time it happens again, I'll pipe up. I cannot undersand why that rancid vermin has been allowed to get away with it all this time.

If (when, obviously) I am banned for this, I know I have the moral high ground. Fare thee well to all the good folk here . . .

And lap up the posts of the vermin who you refuse to get rid of!

It won't ever stop until you make it!

My post was sent explicitly to keep this board civilised
and open to polite discussion. Neither Christian nor Jewish missionary
work was stipulated in the rules of the board when I joined it.

I do not think Jesus had the CMG Pub in mind when he gave his
instructions. In any case, all the religions are doing fine propagating
their religions on various battlefields, I just do not think that the Pub
should be yet another one. However, the damage is done, many
a valued member has fallen on the Pub battlefield, never to return.

This is where the libertarian view comes in - just ignore the posts.
