What Magazines Do You Subscribe To ?

The magazines that a person regularly reads tell a lot about that person. For instance, what would it tell you about me if I were to subscribe to this offer I got in the mail today for a new magazine called "Angels On Earth"? The offer says " There's never been a magazine like this before! In each issue you'll read true-life stories of the miraculous intercession of angels here on earth." Now I just don't believe in "angels" (although plenty of people in the church we go to believe in them without question.) $14.95 for a year's worth.

I get TIME, Newsweek, National Geographic, Christian Science Monitor, The Economist, The Weekly Standard, National Review, Smithsonian, Scotland Magazine and American History Magazine. Plus the local newspaper. It's ridiculous! I don't have time to read them all! Plus I like to read books too.

So I'm curious about what ya'll subscribe to.

I have tried several monthlies over the years and for me the best by far is "Prospect". It does not try to impose a particular political slant, indeed it often lets both sides have a say. It is scrupulously edited so that even difficult subjects are made clear (it makes one feel more intelligent than one really is!) and is wide in scope and is never shallow and flashy in the way that what used to be known as "the top dailies" have become.

None, for years now. Used to have subscriptions to record magazines, Opera News, and computer magazines like PC Magazine, but no longer. Many are wholly or partly available online, giving me plenty to read, and I don't have to deal with all that paper.

I have always been a slow reader. Very good comprehension rate, but really slow. On the ACT test for college entrance, on the scale of high school seniors entering college, which is basically what I was (I say "basically" because I worked for two years between high school and college, and took the ACT at the end of that period), I scored a 95th percentile in comprehension and a 6th percentile in speed. It hasn't changed much since.

I subscribe to Fanfare, BBC Music Magazine, and Consumer Reports. I used to subscribe to Cooks Illustrated, but now I just get the annual hardbound copy. I keep getting Foreign Affairs in the mail, though I do not recall ever subscribing. Occasionally I read an article from it. The subscription I am most ashamed of dropping is The Economist; my reading speed is so slow I just couldn't read a tenth of it every week. But it is, by far, the best weekly newsmagazine out there.

I also pick up a local free publication called The Weekly Alibi, which has lots of cultural news, local and state politics, and food and restaurant news and reviews. You can also read it online. Despite the fact that its free, its really a quality publication. One of my favorite features is a page on every city council meeting broken down into three columns: The Issue, in which the issue and the proposed ordinance or other measure designed to deal with it is briefly stated, a second column called The Council's Take, in which the positions of each of the nine councillors who expressed themselves on it is delineated, and a third column called The Reporter's Take, which often has a quite different orientation than that of the council's take.

Reb, you're a liberal and I'm, well, not a liberal But I completely agree with you that The Economist is one of the best magazines currently in publication. I wish you would consider subscribing to it again, even if you just mainly read the Leaders. The cover story of the latest issue is "Cyberwar; The Threat From The Internet". The Leader notes that "cyberspace has become the fifth domain of warfare, after land, sea, air and space." Looking forward to reading the full article.

And every issue of JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine is delivered to my office.
