And how were those pollsters defining "legal"? In many states it has not even been decriminalized for possession of small amounts, and many people will think that this is what "making it legal" means. The most legal pot is ever going to get is legal on a par with tobacco products, and I bet if you used that wording in a poll you'd get quite a different result.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

If you're talking about nationwide legalization, don't bet on it. A single poll result showing modestly favorable public opinion isn't enough. Only two states have passed laws to decriminalize possession, which is only one more than has passed a law establishing Christianity as the state's religion.

The old have so much prejudice to set aside, while the young still have so much to learn. :)

First off, that isn't so, as your own chart shows. The bar for the under-30s falls short of 70%, and for the next age group, short of 60%. Also, demographics alone are not destiny; they may enable a change but do not compel it. The arguments against legalizing marijuana are not arbitrary or irrational:

There is no true analogy with the issue of same-sex marriage. To get married is to surrender a degree of personal freedom and assume a new responsibilty; getting married is something heterosexual people, including conservatives, can understand and empathize with. Smoking pot is none of the above, and the politicians surely know it.

How many people in this country are in jail for possessing, growing, and selling marijuana ? How many law enforcement people spend the vast majority of their working day trying to stop this weed from distribution? How much cost for incarceration, prosecution, police activity continues to be endured by the public on an annual basis ?

What are the dire consequences of legalization of pot as compared to the possible benefits of doing so?

Take the profits out of the drug business and the menace will eventually go away. It's all about the money.

Heroin, crack and and other addictive drugs are another issue to be dealt with but marijuana is the way to begin.

If those aren't just rhetorical questions, the President has answers to them on the White House web site - I've posted the link.

I don't know about elsewhere, but as far as I know, hardly any of the New York Police Department "spend the vast majority of their working day trying to stop this weed from distribution." You have to be really dumb to get busted for pot.

For the rest of it, I won't argue with you. I'm not saying that legalization is a bad idea, just that it isn't likely to happen any time soon, as piston suggested, and there are non-moralizing reasons for that.

Thanks to living_stradivarius' Facebook post for this one. I couldn't figure out the source, and had to key it from scratch rather than copy and paste.

"It all makes sense now. Gay marriage and marijuana are being legalized at the same time. Leviticus 20:13 says if a man lies with another man, he should be stoned. We were just misinterpreting it."
