Buster Keaton "The General" 1926

On the brink of the sound era the great Buster Keaton wrote, directed and starred in this masterpiece, which is beautifully restored. I've often wondered how silent films fared once cinemas had been converted to sound; probably their appeal was short-lived. I remember reading the following article about Keaton in "Time" in 1995 (his 100 year anniversary) by Richard Corliss and was very moved by its contents: magnificently poetic!!

Can anyone please tell me why those bridges in the film (and others) are built with structures which resemble buildings. You see the train driving into a long shed and it's actually a bridge. Same type as in the film "Bridges of Madison County".
