It doesn't really matter if you have the original LP of these Inventions, or any of the compact disc incarnations. None of them have what amounts to about twenty (20) minutes of material of the three Sinfonias mentioned above that were recorded in the same year as the famous 1955 Gould recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations.

The fingerwork rendered by Gould in these 1955 recordings is incredible. He would start over many times (7 takes on one!) and miss some inner voicing and want to do it again (and again!). Producer Howard H. Scott has the patience of Job! And the young Gould voice is quite different from the one we know from his documentary recordings for the CBC or the historical interviews that have been issued. It is really fascinating to hear a musician at work in the studios of one of the major record companies of all time.

Very highly recommended.

:( But what about me? What do I get? Oh well, I guess it's better to give than to receive! And I guess a "wish list" is merely a wish list and not much more unless you get really lucky!

And yes, the area, within a 75-mile radius of Binghamton, New York was severely hit, worse than anyone ever imagined. It's just the way Mother Nature was - and it's been a long time since this area has endured such massive flooding. From the poor to the most wealthy, everyone around here has had an experience with it of some kind or another. Those of us that didn't get touched, or were touched insignificantly, can certainly count their blessings. I know one thing for sure. I would never build a house next to a river - especially one that is as large as the Susquehanna River, which empties into the Mississippi.

More 1955-era Gould? Could I have had better luck on this Friday?

I don't know how much more there can be. Between Columbia/Sony and the CBC in Canada, and perhaps other privately made recordings, it's always a delight to see surprises such as these. The interest in Glenn Gould does not seem to wane and for me, this is great news.

I've never been a big Gould fan, but I do like the CDs of the Hindemith Brass Sonatas and that Strauss Enoch Arden CD he did.

I'd hate to start my first post here like this but here's some more interesting stuff for Gould fans...

A friend sent me this link and said this DVD about Gould was comming out in September at some point.

The link takes you to a cool little site describing the film that was directed by Bruno Monsaingeon.

here ya go... Nice to meet y'all!
