Bourbon anyone?

Normally a Scotch drinker, I’ve been sampling Bourbons lately. Would anyone like to recommend some brands? Let’s throw in Tennessee whiskies too in the discussion. While it will be fun to try a range of makes, ultimately I want to find a good inexpensive whiskey for regular sipping. Fortunately, American whiskies are by and large cheaper than those from Scotland and, if the magazines and websites that review and rate them are to be believed, some very low-priced brands are of quite high-quality. Availability is an impediment here in the Baltimore area. You just can’t find many of the brands I've read about but I’ve heard the Washington, DC area has more to offer. Right now I’m enjoying a glass of Old Weller Antique 107 with a little water which is very nice.

No, not right, now, please. Though I have had my own experience with alcohol, it is for me the family disease, and when I hear "bourbon, " I hear "Old Grandpa." My paternal grandfather actually drank rye whiskey, but he died at 73 of esophogeal varicies, after many years of extreme alcoholism producing many other classic effects. No, don't talk to me about Johnny Corngold.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I'm currently not drinking any more, mainly for health reasons (i.e. trying to lose weight), but in the past I've enjoyed Jim Beam Black Label, which has been aged for eight years and is available for under 20 bucks for 25 ounces (I think--haven't checked the prices lately.) Knob Creek is wonderful, but expensive. Good ol' Jack Daniels and Coke has always been one of my favorite drinks.
Yes, the DC area has a great selection, although the prices can be high.

A side note of no particular interest: My dad used to own and run a liquor store, so I grew up wearing Johnny Walker Red, Seagram's Seven, and Crown Royal t-shirts as a kid; our family had a big, ultra-tacky faux-velvet "7" sitting in our living room for years, and my brother loved his Wild Irish Rose baseball cap, long before he even knew what the stuff even was. Yes, we were, not surprisingly, inundated with free liquor promotional materials, and made good use of the t-shirts, raincoats, etc. And somehow, by some miracle, none of us ever became alcoholics.

And I say this as someone who was involved in a relationship with a raging alcoholic for over two years. Bourbon, wine, and beer are drinks I indulge in maybe a few times a year, if at all. More than that, and they lose all their savor and appeal for me.

No alcohol for me but bourbon flavored steak sauce is one of my favorite condiments.

Hear, hear. I could never understand the appeal of drinking whiskey, bourbon, scotch, any of the brown-ish alcohol, no matter how much water or mix you put into it, it was just plain nasty. Oh, they so loftily say, you have to acquire a taste for Chivas ... and I think ... why would I even want to?

But when you cook with it ... a whole different deal. Interesting, I've never heard of such a thing as a gin-flavored steak sauce :)

My annual drink (if I don't forget) is a glass of Bombay Sapphire on the rocks with a squeeze (no sir, not a twist) of lime, and I take teensy little sips and it is so good. And then I'm done. And the other people say, yuck, how can you drink that stuff straight, it tastes like pine needles or paint thinner or ... :) :) :)

I hear Uncle Jack, aka "Uncle Slug," my dad's uncle. He came to visit us when I was 10 and we were newly vested in Arlington, Virginia. Long after he left, my mother discovered that he had drunk every drop of liquor in the house and filled the bottles with colored sugar water. He was a hard-drinkin' old railroad man and a baseball player from the turn of the century in the Texas league.

I personally never cared for the taste of any liquor, except Kaluha drizzled over spumoni or a rare shot of Grand Marnier. I learned to drink beer as a child with my mom's enchiladas, so it was never a drink to me so much as a condiment with my Mexican dinner. Even now I don't drink much of it - I bought a case of Fosters last May and have had grand total of two cans. I guess I better get the case out of the garage before the serious cold hits here or I'll have an exploding cascading mess on my hands.

Yeah, I've witnessed and heard stories like that ... my late bro-in-law and friend were working in Gary, IN, another b-i-l (I never met him) moved in for a while, drank everything in sight .. one day the roommate said, JB, I think your brother has been drinking my shaving lotion. Unbelievable games played to get to booze -- one relative would offer to "keep an eye" on peoples' places while they were gone, they'd come back and find their stock seriously diluted with water.

Exactly -- a bottle of Pacifico beer with lime along with Mexican food completed the meal. I can't even read the words "Grand Marnier" any more -- since years ago when I went to dinner and had a salad with lots of grated bleu cheese, followed by G.M. That got things bubbling, then went out for more drinks -- by the time my date brought me home I was green, opened the car door and hung upside down by the lawn. My kids came to the back door and were cheering me on, my date laughing and saying "I get the big chunks!". How can people be so heartless :)

Actually I'm glad I can't drink -- has saved me a lot of grief, not to mention $$$.

i'm not a frequent sipper. i did not enjoy scotch, didn't care for bourbon, but liked canadian. if i indulged, i would probably go tennessee...they're my neighbors, or canadian.

Though I primarily am fond of beer and wine in their countless lovely varieties, I enjoy the occasional sippage of spirits. Like you, when it comes to whisk(e)y, my experience is mostly to Scottish and Irish whiskies; do you prefer single or blended malt, and which brands please you? Wish I could help you with a Bourbon recommendation! I personally am right now interested in aquiring some rhum agricole.

Thanks for posting Länzchen. I was beginning to worry that this thread had been taken over by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Single Malt Scotches are rare treats because of the cost. An article on blended Scotches in Forbes Magazine led me to the White Horse brand of blended whisky, which is what I usually drink.

According to Wine Enthusiast magazine, 10 Year Old Evan Williams is one of the best values in Bourbon. I've tried it and it isn't much inferior to the two Weller products I've tasted and it sells for half the price.

When I was really young I had took a sip of beer out of a glass thinking it was juice and hated it. I think that experience established my 'aversion' to alcohol. Tried a few drops of wine in Australia two summers ago and figured it would be an acquired taste.

I did have a bit of champagne at my aunt's thinking it was Sprite -- tasted like it too, somewhat. That's the extent of abusing my liver. Though paté is one of the few tastes I have acquired :)

Bourbon does smell nice :) But same with coffee.

Well, it is an acquired taste. One doesn't have to be opposed to liquor per se to dislike the taste. I'm a thoroughgoing hedonist: I don't eat or drink things I don't like, either ice cream or whiskey.

I actually have tried one of these, in my younger, sillier college days. Not recommended, unless you want to probably spend some time riding the porcelain bus.

I prefer Scotch, but i am not i bigot about it as some people are, i can enjoy a good Bourbon too. Which bourbons are the best? I don't know them too well.

I was actually scared for many years to drink any alcohal, because of the examples I had seen in my life of people who did so, particularly my uncle who nearly ruined his life. But then I realized 1) I don't have to be like that; 2) I have few if any of the common personality traits of addicts; 3) I naturally move towards moderation and balance in my life; and 4) I had been neglecting a whole area of food experience. And in honour of you I then sipped on some Gosling's Black Seal dark rum, which is nothing unique I concede, but one of the best values in rum at only around $16 a bottle and full of a rich chocolately molasses flavour, quite a treat. And hey, thanks for that article, it has introduced me to the names of what seem to be some really great value blended scotches, going to definately seek them next time i'm out; of course it is fun to buy a more expensive spirit once in a while, but I personally can't afford to be extravagent with my food and beverege budget all the time, as much as I would like to be :wink:

I have never tried Gosling's. It was written about recently in Eric Felton's entertaining weekly column on cocktails in The Wall Street Journal. He wrote about the national drink of Bermuda which is something called the "Dark 'n Stormy"

1½ oz Gosling's Black Seal Rum
Barritts Ginger Beer

Apparently it doesn't work without these specific brands as ingredients.

My cousin visits Puerto Rico from time to time and brings back a rum called Ron del Barrilito which is very nice but it may not be available outside the Commonwealth. Otherwise I have little experience with them. I tried the trendy rum cocktail called the Mojito a couple of times and liked it.
