Hyperions: just curious, how many do you have?

Just curious, as a collector, how many HYPERION CDs (or their budget label Helios) you may have in your collections. Now widely available (even through such sources as the BMG Music Club), while still considered an "independent" label, that are among the largest right along with Naxos.

If you keep track or count, I'd be curious to know how many TITLES on Hyperion you have. (Some are multiple sets, but just count titles of individual CDs, sets count as one.)

I did a count and was surprised. 383 was my count and it continues to expand.

I don't have an archive based on record label so I couldn't say exactly....

I do know for sure that I have Bantock's Celtic Symphony disc from Hyperion, though.

You're actually asking us to count how many cds we have? Can't be done man. I've actually exceeded any sense of counting any amount of cds I have any more. They're piled everywhere.

I would guess about 50 or so. Many of them are Marc-Andre Hamelin's recordings.

I keep no catalog and file discs any which way, but I know I have all but one of the Robert Simpson series--that alone runs to over 20 indiv discs.

About fifteen sets, I think (didn´t count them recently, however). The number of CDs makes up between 1½ % and 2 % of my collection.

Well, in my computer database, I can do a search on any label and the count appears at the bottom with the number of entries. I thought most collectors had some way of making an easy determination. When I set up the data base, I set a field for labels and catalogue numbers. No problem, I was curious whether the label appealed to collectors and if so, how frequently they acquired the discs.

I think mebbe I should take a computer course sometime soon. There are lots of ready made programs out there, but I don't even know enough about how they operate to know where to begin with one. I know. I tried. I have downloaded trail versions of a couple, and haven't been able to figure out how to use them.

Anyway, first of all, I have 6 volumes in the Romantic piano concerto series in my multi-composer section, and a CD of Hahn and Vierne chamber music, too. I have the 8 CD box of the Complete Odes & Welcome Songs of Henry Purcell., the 6 CD set of the Shostakovich SQs + the Piano Trio 2 and the Piano Quintet from the St. Pete Qt, the 4 CD set of the Complete Solo Piano Music of Gabriel Faure, 3 Hahn CDs--a chamber music CD and a twofer of songs, the Coombs, Pizarro Milhaud CD, 2 Saint-Saens CDs--the complete piano etudes and 6 pieces for violin & piano, the Mendelssohn concerted piano works, and the Brull piano concerted works, two Grieg SQs by the Chilingirian, the piano concerti of Vianna da Motta, Erno Dohnanyi, and Stojowski, and the 4 CDs (1 CD and a 3 CD set) of Shostakovich solo piano works by Tatiana Nikolayeva.

So, that's 41 CDs all together. Somehow, I thought there were more.

Oh, yeah, I don't have the Schubert song set. I've thought about it, but I keep hoping someone will license it and reorganize it the way I want it--which is not strictly chronologically, but organized by writer, chronologically within each of them.

I'd be surprised if more than 5% of recordings enthusiasts have a computerized database for their collections.

I have been planning on making a database for soooooo long. I guess I'm just too lazy/can't find the right program to do it.

I have all but two or three of the Leslie Howard cycle of Liszt's Complete Music for Solo Piano. I also have a bunch of the Romantic Piano Concerto Series.

I try to get Hyperions whenever possible. I find the recording quality and artists to usually be exceptional. The liner notes/artwork are also usually tops. It certainly is a real tragedy about their legal troubles. I hate how the CDs are so pricey now.

Hyperion is one of the cheaper labels if you buy from BRO ($6.99 - sometimes less), - and they typically have hundreds to select from.

That's true. Whenever I want a Hyperion release, I check BRO first (just like every other label!). Unfortunately, they usually don't have any of the ones I'm looking for anymore. I got a huge chunk of the Leslie Howard set from BRO, though.

Me too. Hyperion is my favorite record label with Deutsche Grammophon running a close second. Then there's Ja Rule's Murder Inc..... Just Kidding!

Four Hyperion, one Helios.

I have Litolff's four surviving Concerto Symphoniques on two Hyperion discs, plus Rachmaninov's All-night Vigil and a Bantock disc of Sappho.

The Helios is Five Italian Oboe Concerti.

Hyperion 133. Helios - a few.

Have more on the CPO label I am sure. And, probably, on Chandos, too.

But Hyperion and Chandos (especially the latter) are not putting out the volume of interesting and new material since the sons took over from the fathers on these labels. I believe CPO has them both beat for quantity and inventiveness of their new releases.

I agree. In HYPERION's case I suspect they're still limited by the judgment against them requiring a huge payout to the plaintiff's counsel.
