Henry VIII was crowned king of England on this date in 1509. A talented musician and composer, he brought cultural diversity the the royal court.

Yes, and one series of SONY Bernstein releases had a different watercolor by HRH on each cover.

Did he actually compose Greensleeves for Anne Boelyn or was it simply a case of plagiarism? (not that anyone was going to object :lol: ).

He didn't compose "Greensleeves." His most frequently recorded composition is "Pastimes for Pleasant Company." For Anne Boleyn he composed "My Beloved Beheaded."

He brought a lot of other things to the royal court as well, including a virtual reign of terror and a propensity actually to destroy culture in the form of the incomparable artistic and spiritual patrimony of the English Catholic church.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

The Church was in his way. He did what he had to do. He was a great king. The last years of his reign were unfortunate and there's some evidence his behavior was mediated by syphillis but, hey, we all have problems.
