This week I am starting to listen to my 5 CD Naxos series of music by John Philip Sousa recorded by Keith Brion and the Rpyal Artillery Band. I listened to most of Vol 1 today. Look next Sunday in the "What are you listening to?" thread.

I think it's always nationalistic, but not always political. Although I do realize many people use the term 'political' anymore to mean nationalistic.

If so, then the United States has a lot to be political about.

I notice that there is no rendition of one of my favorites, "America the Beautiful." (Maybe just as well since I don't care much for pop versions of these things, and yes, I did notice the exceptions.) This beatiful anthem is almost entirely in the subjunctive, having the ring of "may it be so."

America the Beautiful (abridged)
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Those are fine performances - I bought the CDs singly as they came out.

Do you mean patriotic instead of nationalistic?

It cannot be repeated often enough. I'm not one of those wanting to toss the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem, but if I did, it would be for this one. The line 'thy liberty in law', that is pretty fine I think. I can recommend a good recording. The Boston Pops, conducted by Williams.
I believe the arrangement was written by Alexander Courage. Very Nice.
