EMI Icon series
I see more and more of these popping up on Amazon. (Also the EMI Triples - some of them are stupendous - but never mind that).

This one raises the question of whether this material duplicates this recent series, some of which I have:

Coming soon:
That's just piano; there are other performers as well. And I'm sure more are on the way.

Re: EMI Icon series
slofstra, what wonderful news. But, can you imagine how many duplicates are in the Icon series? EMI is notorious for reissueing and recycling material over and over again. But, there may be some 'new' material in the Icon series. I hope so.
Re: EMI Icon series
I catalog every CD I have, so it's pretty easy to double check if I can find a track listing for the new CD issue. But I find lately Amazon hasn't been putting up track listings, or they have those dreaded composer-less track listings. i.e. Violin Sonata No. 3 - no mention of the composer.stenka razin wrote:slofstra, what wonderful news. Arkiv is somewhat better- but even they can be sketchy at times.

Re: EMI Icon series
Hi Henry:
The EMI Icon series is a fabulous/inexpensive way for those younger [maybe some older, too!] collectors who missed opportunitites to get the original CD releases. The EMI RICHTER box (I haven't seen the contents yet) looks interesting because they are probably including ALL his recordings in one boxed set. There are a few things (concertos as I recall) that I did not on original CD release, but I can't be sure. Regardless, this will be a treasure for collectors and it is a set I will want to get.
You asked about the Richter "Master" series. Those are British Decca recordings [11 2-CD sets so far] that would NOT be duplicated by EMI (i.e., identical performances) though some repertoire may be the same. In any event, Richter fans will want to have BOTH the EMI and Decca series.
I have many of the EMI Icon series. I have not acquired the Lipatti set since all that material has been previously issued on CD. I also got the Michelangeli Icon set and discovered all that has been previously been issued on CD. The difference is some of the material has been remastered and is now in probably the best sound those recordings ever had PLUS everything is in one convenient (slim) box. I also got the Solomon set because the man is to die for; again, much duplication. The other Icon sets I have include the Giuseppe di Stefano 3-CD set [06075] and the Mirella Freni 4-CD set [06253]. As Mel (Stenka Rasin) states, EMI is notorious for repackaging and reissuing material. One has to be on one's toes to avoid duplication.
The 17-CD set of David Oistrakh duplicates many items previously issued on CD and/or Testament. Testament are very pricey CDs these days. (I can remember when you could get these for around $14/USD ... now they are among the highest-priced CDs, around $24-$25/USD, even higher than Hyperion.)
Ah, great fun collecting! It's the duplication I try to avoid but it's difficult in these multi-CD sets.

Re: EMI Icon series
The Richter Box will contain Concertos, not just solo piano like the Decca Re-Issues...also they are recorded within a relatively short space of time, the Decca stuff is from many different years, on EMI you get Richter with Muti in Beethoven, Kleiber the Younger in Dvorak, a superb Schubert Wanderer, some studio Beethoven Sonatas, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Bartok with Maazel, the weirdest Greig and Schumann with Von Matacec and his awesome sets of Handel Keyboard suites, unfortunately you will probably get the same Beethoven Triple and Brahms Double as the Oistrakh set...that's from memory, I don't have my database/i-Tunes here right now...

Jussi Bjorling was IMHO the greatest singer ever...non Italian that is, and obviously he was not Maria Callas...his early EMI Recordings are some of the best he ever made...I was never really a Cortot Fan..too many bum notes...slofstra wrote:Nice link. Re: EMI Icon series
Ah - but what piano tone Cortot had. I'm delighted to see that a Cortot release is coming in EMI's ICON series. The only sorrow is that it is not his complete recorded legacy for HMV. His general musicianship and playing, however, was "forgiven" for his numerous missed notes. And it's true, some of the last recordings he made were really not very good; some of those were never even issued by HMV/EMI, including a couple of concerto recordings he made with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops.Chalkperson wrote:I was never really a Cortot Fan..too many bum notes...

Re: EMI Icon series
Thank you, Chalkie! That is quite a site EMI has dedicated to their ICON series. These are fabulous bargains and it is wonderful to have some of this material back in the active catalogue; it looks like EMI has jumped on the "big-box" collections where Universal has apparently dropped that line, which is a pity.

Re: EMI Icon series
My Richter Box arrived today, Bought in the US, Online from the UK and Shipped from France, they have sold out of the first set of Boxes, I bought the last one..like Oistrakh it is an important purchase, I only had about half the stuff already, mainly the Concertos but there are Mozart Violin Sonatas and a bunch of other stuff I did not have as EMI Studio recordings, and the way the discs are coupled is different in all but the Greig/Schumann Farce...so my Richter Collection passes the 200 mark, and I call on Lance to tell us how many Richter recordings he has, I know, but I want you all to know....

I'm getting antsy... My Oistrakh set apparently shipped from Kentucky on the 17th of last month and I still haven't received it!

Re: EMI Icon series
Where did you order it from, fellow Canadian? Perhaps I can share some insight based on my own shipping experiences. I've had mine for a couple of weeks anyway. It's now completely catalogued which means I can start to play some of it.keninottawa wrote:I'm getting antsy... Re: EMI Icon series
Henry, I ordered it from an independent retailer on eBay, so I wouldn't expect the service to be as quick as Amazon or Arkiv.

Re: EMI Icon series
The problem is often Customs depending on how the retailer filled out the paperwork. Amazon seems to breeze through and using the middle level of shipping, I always get my orders way ahead of their projected date. The only thing I don't like about arkiv is that a single order seems to come in lots of little boxes.keninottawa wrote:Henry, I ordered it from an independent retailer on eBay, so I wouldn't expect the service to be as quick as Amazon or Arkiv.
I've tracked shipments using the UPS waybill # and at some point the shipment disappears into the Customs abyss only to re-appear a week or two later.

200 Richter CD's...actually I did it because it was cheaper than it will be in the US, the pound is lower than it has been in a while, Amazon lists it at $94...also I am listening to 20 Box Sets at work, playing each disc in order, these are the Twenty Boxes...but the dipping aspect is not part of the process, you can only play the CD's in the Box in order, you can't jump to a later disc, but you can pick from any box...slofstra wrote:200 titles/sets or 200 CDs?Chalkperson wrote:My Richter Box arrived today, Bought in the US, Online from the UK and Shipped from France, they have sold out of the first set of Boxes, I bought the last one..like Oistrakh it is an important purchase, I only had about half the stuff already, mainly the Concertos but there are Mozart Violin Sonatas and a bunch of other stuff I did not have as EMI Studio recordings, and the way the discs are coupled is different in all but the Greig/Schumann Farce...so my Richter Collection passes the 200 mark, and I call on Lance to tell us how many Richter recordings he has, I know, but I want you all to know....

Canadian Customs is Legendary, the only Country where Fed Ex cannot guarantee a delivery date if it comes from the US...Arkiv ships from lots of different places, some are from the Distributors Directly like Qualiton, Naxos etc...slofstra wrote:The problem is often Customs depending on how the retailer filled out the paperwork. They ship distributor-direct, which is very smart from an inventory management perspective but annoying to the end customer.Chalkperson wrote:Canadian Customs is Legendary, the only Country where Fed Ex cannot guarantee a delivery date if it comes from the US...Arkiv ships from lots of different places, some are from the Distributors Directly like Qualiton, Naxos etc...slofstra wrote:The problem is often Customs depending on how the retailer filled out the paperwork. Re: EMI Icon series
I found it to be very annoying too, if one is buying say 6 CD's then it is likely that they form some kind of listening chain or logic, when the discs arrive in a random order spaced over a week it means that the anticipation for the discs disappears, if however you are buying all discs from one label, or their Arkiv CD's then there is a fair chance the may arrive together, I had two orders like that with some Arkiv CD's of Kubelik and Dorati, the discs arrived together so my pre-thought listening order was kept in place, the other thing I find really annoying is their refusal to have any form of contact by telephone, when I placed my first order I was shocked when it arrived in dribs and drabs, I thought that they were selling me discs that they did not have in stock, I wrote an e-mail complaining and asking when they were going to get humans for us collectors to talk to, they said their Company Philosophy did not include the Telephone, I said that would deter me from purchasing things because I may have questions, they said fine, then don't buy from us, so I don't, except on their Arkiv CD series...slofstra wrote:They ship distributor-direct, which is very smart from an inventory management perspective but annoying to the end customer.

Re: EMI Icon series
Back when I listened to a lot of rock I used to keep 30 to 40 current LPs in one pile. If I played one of them it would move up 10 ranks, unless it was already in the top 20, then it would move half way to #1. If it was #2 it would become #1. Then every week I wrote down my top 10 based on what was at the top of the pile.Chalkperson wrote:200 Richter CD's...actually I did it because it was cheaper than it will be in the US, the pound is lower than it has been in a while, Amazon lists it at $94...also I am listening to 20 Box Sets at work, playing each disc in order, these are the Twenty Boxes...but the dipping aspect is not part of the process, you can only play the CD's in the Box in order, you can't jump to a later disc, but you can pick from any box...slofstra wrote:200 titles/sets or 200 CDs?Chalkperson wrote:My Richter Box arrived today, Bought in the US, Online from the UK and Shipped from France, they have sold out of the first set of Boxes, I bought the last one..like Oistrakh it is an important purchase, I only had about half the stuff already, mainly the Concertos but there are Mozart Violin Sonatas and a bunch of other stuff I did not have as EMI Studio recordings, and the way the discs are coupled is different in all but the Greig/Schumann Farce...so my Richter Collection passes the 200 mark, and I call on Lance to tell us how many Richter recordings he has, I know, but I want you all to know....

Also. When I was a kid before I could afford to buy my own records I published my own top 40 every week - I was that annoyed with how the stations picked them. I think I stopped around the time I had my first girlfriend. I still have all those charts in a binder somewhere - they go from late 1965 to about 1970. I remember that 'Listen People' by Herman's Hermits was #1 for a long time. I'm not sure I was really any better than the stations in retrospect, although some of my favourites have really had staying power.

Re: EMI Icon series
There is, I admit a certain degree of obsession among Collectors when it comes to Richter, we can't seem to get enough of his playing, so given the financial advantage and the fact that there were Chamber Music discs in the box necessitated an instant purchase, he recorded relatively little Chamber Music so I was eager to hear the Mozart Violin Sonatas...slofstra wrote: 200 titles/sets or 200 CDs?

Other great news on the Richter front...I have long treasured my Music and Arts disc of Richter in Leipzig from November 28th 1963, it's mostly Beethoven and Brahms, but it had an annoying tape noise on the Sonata Number 30, Parnassus has managed to find a process that eliminates that noise AND they have released the entire Concert, in better sound, an essential purchase IMHO...
http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/alb ... _id=204338
This is also one of my favourite Richter discs, from Saltzburg in 1977...
http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/alb ... m_id=43614
and you won;t go far wrong with these three discs on Regis...The Diabelli Variations...

and this Tchaikovsky one...

and this one from Melodiya is justly famous...and is available from Analekta's new Distribution Deal with Melodiya...they are Canadians Henry, eh...
http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/alb ... m_id=93215
So speaking from my Disposable Income Specialist's POV I think the EMI Box and these six discs are essential purcheses and avoid duplication with the EMI Box except for a Beethoven Sonata or two...
Thanks Henry for fixing my links...
