Re: What are YOU listening to today or acquiring?
I pinched a used copy of the Harnoncourt Schumann 3 and 4 on Amazon Marketplace for 5 bucks, and I also have an older recording of Schumann 4 (and Schubert 4) with the Berlin Philharmonic. Unfortunately the booklet of the old Berlin recording is defective. It has the right cover but all the pages inside seem to describe a Neal Young album. Does anyone know offhand if the Harnoncourt/Schumann 4/Berlin recording is the original or revised version? (I guess it's likely to be revised version if there is no explicit mention on the cover.)Fergus wrote:I would certainly be interested in hearing thatJared wrote:

Mahler Symphony No.6 in A Minor (Live) (Abbado / B.Phil., DG)
"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and
combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and
especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage
over the other media through which a person can represent
the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme
capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the
assistance of reason...Music presents at once the intensity
and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and
intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended
by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like
a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul."

It's actually pretty good, and he has excellent soloists...Fergus wrote:I didn't know that he did one....I would have acquired it just to annoy youChalkperson wrote:

-Pampeana, for 'cello and piano, op. 21 (1959).

This I've never heard... How is it? When in his career was it composed?johnQpublic wrote:Walton - Johannesburg Festival Overture (Thomson/Chandos)

Ginastera:
-"Cancion al arbor del Olvido" from Two Songs, op. 3 (1938)
with Jose Carreras.
-Cantos del Tucuman, op. 4, for voice, violin, flute, harp and two Indian Cajas (1938), with a semi-professional ensemble...the singer was very good.
-Duo for flute and oboe, op. 13 (1945). Neat little piece.
-Pampeana no. 1, for violin and piano, op. 16 (1947). Quite dissonant at this point in Ginastera's aesthetic development.
-Rondo sobre temas infantiles argentinos, op. 19, piano (1947)
-String quartet no. 1, op. 20 (1948). His first "major work"?

Re: What are YOU listening to today?
1956, Ken, which places it a little beyond the mid-point in his career. It's not unlike his other overtures (Scapino & Portsmith Point) in that it's lively, sassy and a tiny bit brassy with several tunes that keep reappearing but always altered through re-orchestrations and re-harmonizations. It's good stuff.Ken wrote:This I've never heard... How is it? When in his career was it composed?johnQpublic wrote:Walton - Johannesburg Festival Overture (Thomson/Chandos)
