Beatles Remastered
Beatles Remastered
I went onto Amazon's music homepage last night to look up something and I quickly forgot what I was going to look up because of the large interactive ad promoting the first digital remasterings from the original sources of all of the Beatles original albums.
I don't listen to much pop music, but when I do, it's more often than not The Beatles. I've already got all of their original albums (as opposed to the various collections that came out after they split) on CD, but I'm considering pre-ordering a couple of my favorites to see how much of a difference there is. Will anyone else dip their toes in the water or will all of you who like The Beatles and have some of their music on CD just stick with what you've got?

Re: Beatles Remastered
The Beatles Rock Band Edition is coming out in September. I'm going to lose several nights of sleep (and my voice) when I get this:
Re: Beatles Remastered
I'm not sure what I will do. I was hoping that they would release these in a high definition, i.e., SACD format. If the whole point in remastering these was to be able to sell them, yet again, in better sound, why not go all the way and issue them in the best possible digital sound?

Re: Beatles Remastered
Well, as I've long ago formulated my opinions on the various Beatle projects, and as I'm still PO'd at EMI for making the initial CD releases of the group's first four albums in mono, I'm still kind of protesting in principle. (I mean, 23 years & only now they've put them out in stereo?) And as for the Capitol albums box sets, I put my LP copies onto cassette, and then to CD-R once I got a machine for that stuff. The corporate giants' ploys ain't gonna work for me.
Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease, and quits the memory with difficulty.

Re: Beatles Remastered
Tangentially . . . out of curiosity, I did pick up the 40th anniversary reissue of This Was Jethro Tull, with the Original Mono LP Remastered for disc I, and a New Stereo Album Mix for disc II. And . . . I like it.Wallingford wrote:Well, as I've long ago formulated my opinions on the various Beatle projects, and as I'm still PO'd at EMI for making the initial CD releases of the group's first four albums in mono . . . .

Re: Beatles Remastered
I'm a little confused.
There's a complete mono set and a complete stereo set. The complete mono set includes in mono only those LPs originally released in mono. I'm good so far. Some of the discs in the mono set include a stereo and a mono LP. Still good. There are 13 discs in the mono set, 16 in the stereo. Why? The stereo set lists 'Past Masters', the mono set does not but mentions something called 'Mono Masters'??
Also, the stereo releases I remember had bass in the left channel, drums in the right (not exactly but you get the picture). Is the stereo set, a stereo remix?
And why do you think they sound so much better, Ted. Have you heard these new transfers?
LATER EDIT - The US amazon site at least lists out the album titles. The only difference I can see is the Masters issue and also, no mono Yellow Submarine? They've also remixed the original stereo albums into mono according to the US site. Why? And why can't they call the White Album, the White Album like the rest of the world. That confused me for another 2 minutes and 10 seconds.
Bottom line - which one do you buy?

Because it's not the name of the album. Of course everyone calls it that in conversation, but I wouldn't expect a site like Amazon to list one of their products by its nickname, as opposed to its actual name.slofstra wrote: And why can't they call the White Album, the White Album like the rest of the world. Re: Beatles Remastered
I actually don't think it is the name of the album. It is the name of the artist and the album has no name. It was pretty cool. On the original release, the name was embossed so you almost couldn't see it. Later they went to a thin grey ink.Barry wrote:Because it's not the name of the album. Re: Beatles Remastered
I remember a story I probably heard while listening to some Beatles special on the radio years ago. George Martin or maybe Paul McCartney showed up at a party with the tapes of the White Album after they finished recording it, but before it was released to the public. They played the tapes with the volume up loud and the windows open. They apparently drew quite a crowd outside.slofstra wrote:I actually don't think it is the name of the album. Re: Beatles Remastered
All 4 Beatles hated what Capitol did to their original Parliphone mono releases (in the early 60’s, Stereo was a selling point here, but in the UK not, the first 2 or 3 Beatle Albums were mixed in mono and then remixed in stereo for the US market.
George Martin/ Engineers Norman Smith/ Jeff Emorick simply moved the vocals to one side and the other for the backing tracks. It wasn’t true stereo and in fact for Beatle freaks like me, it was great because you could literally listen to the band alone or the vocals alone.
These new releases I believe will be available in both the original Mono and Stereo versions. Very expensive but worth it IMO

Re: Beatles Remastered
I'd ALWAYS felt it passed beyond belief that a studio as technologically innovative as London's Abbey Road, Studio 3, was still conceiving their pop albums in mono (even 1967's Sgt. Pepper which, according to Mark Lewisohn's book Beatles Recording Sessions, was really better off heard in monaural!!!).....and even their early singles--like as not, the label and/or engineers threw away the original multitrack tapes (which, in my book, are true stereo--binaural is the proper word).Ted wrote:All 4 Beatles hated what Capitol did to their original Parliphone mono releases (in the early 60’s, Stereo was a selling point here, but in the UK not, the first 2 or 3 Beatle Albums were mixed in mono and then remixed in stereo for the US market.

It's impossible to get many other British Invasion groups' singles in stereo.

What an interesting thread. Another of too few thread on the Corner Pub that I can really relate too. I so will get those records. Thank you for letting me know about their release. I have been a huge fan of their work ever since I am 13. Out of topic here. Who was your favorite people and why ?
Re: Beatles Remastered
Any word on whether this is an audiophile release or just another typical "loudness war" release? I've stopped buying any new pop CDs, especially remasters, because they sound horrible with compressed dynamics.

Re: Beatles Remastered
Starr and I photographed George Martin for a formal studio portrait the day he played Sgt Pepper Master Tape to approve the CD release, the words The Beatles were written on the box in pencil and two Security Men from Abbey Road stood outside the Control Room door, he played the whole thing thru once, then played Day in the Life with just John's vocals, it was pretty amazing, then, after that track finished was a ton of musical stuff that was clipped for the LP release, I wonder if that will be on there...yeah, I had a cool job twenty five years ago...Barry wrote:I'd really love to hear I Am the Walrus and A Day in the Life in the best possible sound.Ted wrote:Totally worth every penny.
PS the new masterings are incredible, you can trust me on that...
I also once played Paul McCartney a Bootleg that my friend, Barry, had made of the original Beatles Demo's, he called them The Fab's and it was on the Deccagone Label, Paul was blown away and immediately summoned George Martin and told him to copy my cassette, it was at Abbey Road in Studio One...

Up to 1967-ish, the mono mix was the primary one for pop music. Stereo was a new fad, and quite artificial in this genre. We're not talking about closing your eyes and picturing the breadth of the orchestra. In general, time was taken to get the mono mix just right, as the great majority of people would hear it that way. The stereo mix was an afterthought, done separately. In the case of Pink Floyd's first LP, done in the same place & at the same time as Sgt. Pepper, it took the producer & the band a week to do the mono mix. The stereo one was done by one man in a day. Guess which is better? That's an opinion too, and it's nice to have both, but for me the mono version is much superior.
So if I were a Beatles fan wondering which to buy, I'd expect the mono to be "right" and the stereo pretty cheesy until the later years.
Just sayin'...

Re: Beatles Remastered
Giving credit where it’s due, Parliphone the Beatles UK label, which like Capitol was owned by EMI, did a great job mixing and pressing the early albums.
The actual EQ/Mixing was sublime with Paul’s bass sounding like no other bass I’ve ever heard since.
Plus while the Parliphone albums were usually 14 tracks the Capitol versions were 12 so US fans never (Until Sgt Pepper) heard the chronology of the band’s output as they recorded it.
A glaring example of this is “Drive My Car” which was the opening track on the UK “Rubber Soul” and in the US an almost filler track on “Yesterday and Today (The Butcher Cover Album) Released 6 months after Rubber Soul.
Paul’s “I’ve just seen a Face and “Yesterday” were on “Help” while in the US both songs were on different albums.
I could go on but I still get angry to this day thinking about how the money grubbing marketing people at Capitol did this to the Fab Four

Yeah. I used to have a lot of those "U.S. releases" on vinyl. It was nice that they went with the original British releases when the CDs came out. I think at this stage, just out of curiosity, that I would only be interested in hearing remastered versions of Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road. The rest I would leave as is....especially the Double White which is a great favourite of mine and contains many truly excellent examples of their individual capabilities.

Quite a few of the White Album mono cuts are significantly different from the stereo counterparts: there's an entirely different fiddle track on "Don't Pass Me By" (also, it was electronically speeded up, thus raising the pitch & making it bouncier than the clunkier stereo version); different bird sounds on "Blackbird" and different pig grunts on "Piggies"; John's saxophone squeaks on "Helter Skelter"--he couldn't play it, of course--and there's no "false ending" situation; and (reportedly) many others.
Good music is that which falls upon the ear with ease, and quits the memory with difficulty.

I wonder just how good they will be. Will benefit arise from just re-digitising the master tapes (even if they could copy the stereo from the master somehow)? so I suppose they're just going to add extra outboard effects to make the music sound more exciting. Unless I'm mistaken, Sgt Pepper was made on a 15ips Teac 4-track.JackC wrote:I'm not sure what I will do. I was hoping that they would release these in a high definition, i.e., SACD format. I know those I've seen contain none of the bonus tracks of the first digital masterings where applicable.
I might borrow the Sgt Pepper just to see if it's better than the original CD.
Re: Beatles Remastered
Thanks Chalkie. Now I see what they're up to on the marketing side. The stereo box set is the one to get for most of us for $199 US. If you're really into it, then also get the remastered mono for an extra $239 US ... only 10,000 of those to be released in the US.
The advertising for the stereo box set claims the original mono LPs are being mixed in stereo for the first time. I'm guessing then that Rubber Soul/ Revolver are new stereo mixes otherwise what would be the point. Why put a new shine on the old mono LPs and not do the same for the first stereo LPs? The remastered mono set claims to also include the 'original' stereo mix for those LPs.

Re: Beatles Remastered
I'm listening to the remastered Revolver and extremely happy with what I'm hearing. The piano solo in Good Day Sunshine and the horn in For No One are so real and immediate sounding that it's almost like the musicians are in the room with me. Here, There and Everywhere is another standout in terms of sound improvement.

Did you buy the set? I'd like to hear more reviews!! My favorite is probably Abbey Road - changes with my mood though.Barry wrote:I'm listening to the remastered Revolver and extremely happy with what I'm hearing. No. I'm not spending that much since I would very rarely listen to some of those CDs. I started with Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. I just ordered Rubber Soul, the White Album and Abbey Road. I'll probably stick with the older CDs for the rest.keaggy220 wrote:Did you buy the set? I'd like to hear more reviews!! So far, I think the improvement for Revolver is more impressive than that for Sgt. Pepper.

Re: Beatles Remastered
Wow! Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite really sounds amazing when they bring in the carnival music.
And you can hear what Paul is singing much more clearly in When I'm 64.
I may have to alter my earlier comment. I'm becoming gradually more impressed with the sound of Sgt. Pepper with almost every song.

Re: Beatles Remastered
Just listened to Abbey Road. Wow!!! I'm noticing things I've never heard before in this recording. I almost feel like I'm listening to it for the first time, even though I've listened to this album hundreds of times before. That silver hammer sounded great!!!

Thanks for posting that Youtube video. I can't stand the loudness war. Trust me, though, that is nowhere to be found on these remasters.rwetmore wrote:Any word on whether this is an audiophile release or just another typical "loudness war" release? I've stopped buying any new pop CDs, especially remasters, because they sound horrible with compressed dynamics.
Check out this youtube video for a quick demonstration of what I'm referring to:

My advice would be to wait for the professional reviews of these before ordering.

Chad is right. This isn't about loudness. It's about clarity, and more realistic sound.ch1525 wrote:Thanks for posting that Youtube video. I can't stand the loudness war. Re: Beatles Remastered
I for one was very disappointed that they decided not to issue these on Super Audio Compact Disc. The entire point of the exercise is, in theory, to provide these classics in new, better sound. Well, for some of us, SACD is better than CD and we are ready to pay the price for it, especially when we are only talking about a very limited number of albums.
I know everything is about money, but I suspect that they could have recouped whatever it costs to issue these in SACD simply by charging what they needed.

I listened to Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour last night and was very pleased with what I heard. The clarity was amazing. The real test for me will be how the early albums stack up against the amazing Toshiba vinyl that I have treasured for years.
That said, and I am happy that I lived long enough to buy all these albums again, but I hope it is the last time.

Re: Beatles Remastered
Be assured that'll probably happen when Sir Paul feels skint again. He's one of the few artists who have absolute control over this stuff. They (he and EMI) haven't stopped milking this cow yet, you bet.JackC wrote: I know everything is about money, but I suspect that they could have recouped whatever it costs to issue these in SACD simply by charging what they needed.

Re: Beatles Remastered
I played Revolver and the White Album, clarity and seperation on the White Album were astounding, all Paul's drumming was clearly audible, he never played Ringo's Kit, he made small perciussive elements all over the place, on one track, maybe Prudence or Piggies you could hear the four individuals whistling and clearly tell there were four people involved...Revolver sounded great but made me wish I had the Mono set, even with the remastering it still sounds kind of fake, I will try Rubber Soul tonight, along with Abbey Road...
Paul's Singing on Bungalo Bill is incredible too, he once played me Martha my Dear on the Stand up Piano in Abbey Road No.2, the CD sounds better than the original instrument, all those instruments are still at Abbey Road, in the broom cupboard, anyone can use them, also in the Liner Notes my dear friend Chris Thomas gets an "Additional Production" credit, he worked with George Martin and when George took a weeks holiday Chris worked with John and added lots of compression, he did the same thing to Dark Side of the Moon which upset Alan Parsons for Decades, amazing to read that he was 21 at the time of the White Album...

Re: Beatles Remastered
Revolver sounds a lot like Wings, especially Got to Get You into My Life, with George Martin's Brass Section...Taxman comes across less steamroller like than I remember...George's Vitriol comes across well...Barry wrote:I'm listening to the remastered Revolver and extremely happy with what I'm hearing. I think Here, There and Everywhere may be the best "sounding" song on the remastered Revolver.Chalkperson wrote:Revolver sounds a lot like Wings, especially Got to Get You into My Life, with George Martin's Brass Section...Taxman comes across less steamroller like than I remember...George's Vitriol comes across well...Barry wrote:I'm listening to the remastered Revolver and extremely happy with what I'm hearing. I really was not going to bother with these remasters at all but reading this thread has really raised my interest level
