I do listen to Schumann occasionally, mostly to the 2nd which I find to be the most exciting and cogent of all his symphonies.

Ha ha...what a coincidence.

I listened to #2 with Szell/Cleveland this afternoon. It's also my favorite symphony of his, for similar reasons to those you mentioned. I also listened to Piano Sonata No. 1 with Pollini. The playing was excellent; work still leaves me lukewarm.

More than a virtuoso, Znaider is a true artist, he´s so musical and engaging. There´s really nothing to fault in these excellent performances except for the balance of soloist and orchestra. I can´t believe they are still recording like this: Znaider is so much to the front, that the VPO seems to be playing in another room, which is very rude considering we are talking about the Vienna Philharmonic. It isn´t necessary to record the soloist so close, BIS for example, in the Leonidas Kavakos Sibelius concertos (original and revised editions) shows that as long as the soloists is focused, it´s possible to give a realistic balance with the orchestra. As for recent recordings of Brahms´Concerto, I enjoyed slightly more Vadim Repin´s DG version, mostly because the Gewandhaus orchestra and Chailly were caught in a VERY good day. Still, Znaider and Gergiev are worth adding to your collection.

Such an outstanding work. Listened to this 3 times in the car today. It never gets old. The Timpani in this recording is far superior than the recorded quality in the other version I have which is in the box set by Jansons.

Bychkov seems to have run hot and cold in Paris. Though nice enough, I'd place this closer to zero on the Celsius scale -- fine execution and nicely intimate recording, but I've certainly heard more "life" in this stuff elsewhere...despite a stirring Farandole and Les Toréadors! Probably right orchestra, wrong guy on the podium.

Yeah, pretty corny. It's from an old budget line, but it's a great performance. I like Kertesz' VPO account much more than his his better-known LSO 9th.

have just cracked open a new boxset for March... which I find to be very interesting listening...

I so far have heard Symphs 1-4 (4 is the only one I am familiar with) and so far, so good. I am finding them more accessible than I imagined I would have (although I hear that No 6 is a bit of a beast).

HENSELT: 24 CHARACTERISTIC ETUDES......Daniel Graham, piano (Musical Heritage Society MHS-): This '74 release must be the first time anyone recorded these; Graham's one of my piano teachers from my undergrad days, & he put up $4000 to record & release this. Examplary playing of the Romantic school, by a fervent believer.

Seán, you should try the Hipocondrie a 7 from that set. You're unlikely to hear anything remotely like it anywhere else in the entire Baroque idiom.

Today I´m listening to Mozart´s Divertimento Kv 563 with the Trio Ricercar.
When I was a teen in the 70´s I was in a music store in London and there was the great Belgian violinist Arthur Grumiaux. I told him how much I loved his recording of the Mozart violin concertos and the Sinfonia Concertante with the LSO and Colin Davis. He recommended me Mozart´s Divertimento in E-flat for violin, viola and cello, and said, dead seriously, that it was the greatest piece of chamber music ever composed. I absolutely agree, There aren´t many recordings of this heavenly masterpiece, but the few recordings are outstanding, with names like Heifetz, Grumiaux, Accardo, Stern, and in period instruments L´Archibudelli and the Trio Ricercar. It´s one of Mozart´s longest instrumental works at some 50´minutes, and every second of it is Heaven.
You don´t want to leave this Earth without knowing it.

Shostakovich IV: Ormandy/Philadelphia, Chung/Philadelphia

The Philadelphians premiered this work in the West, and recorded it years before the Russians made their own statement with Kondrashin. If you don't have the Ormandy, get it!
