Family musicians performing together?
The Petrenko/Berlin Phil thread prompts me to write this one.
When you think of various husbands/wives, fathers/sons/daughters/cousins and what-have-you performing and/or recording together, there are quite a few examples.

Re: Family musicians performing together?
Brother and sister partnerships are perhaps not the same as other blood and non-blood relationships; growing up in the same household, etc. Nannerl and Wolfgang Mozart, and any number of Bachs.

Re: Family musicians performing together?
The first combination that comes to mind is one of "exes" -- Martha Argerich and Charles Dutoit. I've had the good fortune to attend a couple of Philadelphia Orchestra concerts where Martha Argerich appeared as a concerto soloist with her "ex" conducting the Orchestra. Can't comment about their personal relationship, but they certainly made great music together....and concluded the performance with a kiss on the lips.

Didn't see pianist Claude Frank who performed with his wife, pianist Lillian Kallir, and their daughter, violinist Pamela Frank. Wikipedia reports that violinist Miriam Fried performs with her son, pianist Jonathan Biss.

Re: Family musicians performing together?
I guess we are not surprised to find multiple members of a family who share musical talent: married couples who met "through work" and their talented offspring (there must be a genetic factor, I suppose).
I think it would be really interesting to compile a list of musicians who "came out of nowhere"--the first in their family to exhibit musical talent.
This sometimes happens in other fields of endeavor. For example, my wife's thesis advisor (decades ago) is a world-famous mathematician who was the first in his family to go to college--and that path wasn't even something the family had seriously considered.
I'll start the ball rolling with pianist Paul Lewis. Any others?

Re: Family musicians performing together?
It probably shouldn't be surprising, but many notable composers - maybe most of them - were the children of professional or serious amateur musicians. That would give them a head start in the home over others from unmusical families who learned their skills and craft from teachers, or the far fewer who were self-taught.Beckmesser wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2019 4:45 pmI guess we are not surprised to find multiple members of a family who share musical talent: married couples who met "through work" and their talented offspring (there must be a genetic factor, I suppose).

Re: Family musicians performing together?
I just heard an excerpt of a new recording on the radio: pianist Orli Shaham performing Mozart's PC 17 with her husband, David Robertson, conducting the St. Louis Symphony. The announcer said that the record label (something with canary?) was started by Orli's brother, violinist Gil Shaham.
Re: Family musicians performing together?
I have a recording of Ravel's Piano Concerto and d'Indy's Symphony on a French Mountain Air with Charles Munch leading Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer (his niece by marriage) and the Boston Symphony from the 1960's. It's an excellent reading of both pieces. She also recorded Prokofiev II with Munch, IIRC.

Right on. I've prepared pianos for Orli in the past. Canary Records is Shaham's own label. He apparently started it when his contract with DGG expired or he was released from the label. Ihave several of the Canaries!

Re: Family musicians performing together?
The Viennese Kutrowatz Brothers; both of them teach at the Wiener Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. I have seen them performing in Vienna, but there isn't much of their playing available on U-Tube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD7ogEyCv6E
And the Viennese Ottensammer family played together before Ernst's untimely death 2 years ago; Daniel (Vienna Philharmonic) and Andreas (Berlin Philharmonic) played with their father as the Clarinotts. I'm unsure about whether the brothers are playing together now that their father has gone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePlowCHFwxg
They could have become movie stars!!!! It was a terrible day when Ernst Ottensamer died, July 2017.

And the Jussen Brothers, once again:
