Martha Argerich playing Scarlatti

Post by Danny » Sat Oct 05, 2019 12:51 pm

I recently came across a performance in which she played a Scarlatti sonata as an encore.

Please start listening from 30:00 in.
She left me breathless!

Argerich is brilliant. One wonders why Scarlatti is NOT featured more in her many, many recordings. Good stuff!

When she started to play, Mr. Steinway came down and personally
rubbed his name off the piano. [Speaking about pianist &*$#@+#]

Thanks, Danny! Argerich is one of my favorite artists: I have all her recordings in box sets now. In your clip, the Beethoven's not bad either!

Here's another great Scarlatti I heard first time couple days ago, not Argerich, and very different, but arguably breathtakingly beautiful, too, K. 213:

For some reason Danny's U-Tube clip has not appeared on the screen for me. It's just a white, gaping hole. This happens for me a lot on this site!! And when anything does appear it is a white gap and just a link at the bottom. In this case, neither.

I love Scarlatti's sonatas and have done since I attempted to play them in 7th Grade. They mustn't be too rushed, though, in my opinion - else the internal logic is lost. These are great works in the canon.

You are lucky to actually see something. When I looked at the post I thought that he'd forgetten to include the link.

Belle and Holden Forth--

I've been using Microsoft to view and play the links. My Google Chrome browser comes up with a picture with an arrow to play at its center, but the link doesn't play. Annoying. When JohnF posts the actual picture with the arrow in the center, those work with google chrome.
