Brahms Clarinet Quintet

What are your favorite recording of this piece? I really enjoy it and am making an effort to find the best. I bought two recordings and one is pretty good, the other is too slow (the Seraphim recording). -Thanks for your suggestions.

Karl Leister and the Amadeus Quartet is a favorite of mine.

I've never heard a bad performance of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, which is remarkable considering its difficulty. Performers who are not up to it seem to be readily aware of the fact, and those that are put in special dedication to presenting it well.

One of the most magical performances I've attended was with Richard Stoltzman and the Tokyo Quartet. One might think Stoltzman too much of a clown to do justice to the Brahms, but he's also a very serious musician. From the moment he started playing he seemed suddenly to have grown in age and in wisdom.

Reginald Kell recorded the Brahms Quintet with the Busch Quartet in London for EMI in 1937, I have yet to hear a performance that is as completely convincing (EMI 7 64932). The Busch Quartet with two personal changes can be heard with Kell in a live performance given in New York on December 19, 1948 (Music & Arts CD-1107).

Wasn't one of those reissued on Testament a few years ago?

It was released on Testament SBT 1001 in 1991 coupled with the definitive performance of the Brahms Horn Trio (Busch, A. Brain, and Serkin).
