The young American conductor Jonathon Heyward, just 26, was recently appointed Chief Conductor at the Norwestdeutsche Philharmonie, starting January 2021. This was a post held at one point by Andris Nelsons. I am still at a loss to understand why Heyward has not gotten more engagements in the United States, particularly after his spectacular debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic a year and a half ago filling in for Miguel Harth-Bedoya for what was not an easy program. It seems that we are still back in the days when African-American conductors such as Dean Dixon had to go to Europe to have any sort of career.
