In “Tár,” one of the year’s best-reviewed films, and also one of the most discussed, Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a renowned conductor and composer whose true art might be the power she wields — over the orchestra she leads, over the young women she dangles opportunity in front of, and beyond.

The film centers on Tár’s downfall after some of her past misbehaviors begin to return to haunt her, and it details the ways in which she is protected by those around her, until she’s deemed expendable. There are strong analogues to recent real-world scenarios in which the very famous are able to hold on to their platforms, or build new ones, as they come under fire.

On this week’s Popcast, a conversation about the provocations of “Tár,” and whether repugnant people can make great art, or if anyone should pay attention to it if they do.

Guests:

Alison Wilmore, Vulture film critic

Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times’s classical music critic
