In the wake of the death of composer Charles Wuorinen (his eponymous opera was based on her work), I am re-reading Proulx's moving story, a New Yorker original publication still available online at their website.

My school is offering a course next year entitled The Voice of the Other which will explore literary and visual texts by authors who gave voice to marginalized groups in America. I'm hoping that this fine short story (c/w the 2005 movie) might be one of the texts the teachers decide to include in their course.
